BELMONT STAKES PROSPECTS One Hundred and Thirty of Orig ¬ inal Entries Still Eligible Shares with Kentucky Derby and Treakness TreaknessStakes Stakes Distinction of Being One of 30 000 Spring Races of American Tnrf NEW YORK N Y February 24 Because the thoroughbred practically reaches ma ¬ turity at three years the races for horses of that age surpass all others in interest It is the case in England with its Epsom Derby Oaks St Leger and other supreme tests and it is equally true of France with its Grand Prix de Paris and the big events of the late autumn which usually bring the pick of the British racers across the Chan ¬ nel to try conclusions with the best on the continent continentIt It is natural then to find the racing en ¬ thusiasts of the United States at this time of the year more concerned about such races as the Belmont and Preakncss Stakes and the Kentucky Derby each of which is now a 50000 event and brings out great gath ¬ erings of the racing elect on the occasion of their running runningTurf Turf customs vary little and the love of a good horse is not a matter of geography At about the same period as the English and French are speculating on the chances of the candidates for their great classics there is the greatest interest in the outcome of the Belmont Stakes in this country The fact that it follows both the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby which are decided early in May and is nearer the ideal Derby distance than either of these events the conditions calling for a test of one mile and three eights instead of a mile and an eighth and a mile and a quarter for the Pimlico and Churchill Downs races respectively gives the winner of the Belmont Park stake a prestige which breeders have appreciated to the fullest as is shown by their patronage o the
