MAVOURNEEN CANTERS Wins Off by Herself from Uncle Velo and Tody Saddle and Boots Again Victo ¬ rious Big Attendance at Jefferson Park NEW ORLEANS La March 10 The con ¬ nections of Saddle and Boots will have to seek another alibi than that the horse is n rail runner for it was thoroughly disposed of by the horses performance this afternoon in the threequarters handicap contested by the best sprinters here when he raced in an outside course from the start and only had an inner position when he drew away from the others in the last seventy yards He won in game style after having borne the brunt of contention for the entire race and disposed of different contenders at various times The rail running theory was ad ¬ vanced on the occasion that he raced poorly and since then it has been generally accepted that he would not do his best unless he occupied a position next to the inner rail Wolfs Cry had the call in the race and flat ¬ tered extensively by racing LEffare into defeat in the first half mile but in the stretch he tired and gave way steadily first to Saddle and Boots and later to Barracuda and Calcutta Barracuda might have been closer up but for being unable to get through on the stretch turn which forced him to lose much ground by coming around the leaders Calcutta made an excellent showing and the race was in the nature of a preliminary for a start in the 10000 Louisiana Derby to be raced a week hence over this track trackJ J R Skinkers Duke John furnished an outstanding upset this afternoon when he ac ¬ counted for the mile and an eighth claiming handicap in easy style from Neddam and Ralco with the heavily supported favorite Ramkin soundly beaten The winner at ¬ tended the pacemaker Neddam close up ana steadily wore him down in the stretch racing drawing out in the last seventy yards while Neddam and Ralco were battling it out spir ¬ itedly for second place The winners race contrasts badly with his last preceding one oneSPECULATION SPECULATION HEAVY HEAVYProspects Prospects of a deluge from the overcast sky did not decrease enthusiasm of the rac ¬ ing fraternity here An attendance of holi ¬ day number was on hand to view the sport and try their skill at picking the winners Forty layers took care of the speculative wants and most of the money entrusted to them as winners were again elusive and favorites were beaten in a majority of the dashes Track conditions could not be im ¬ proved on and the small but select fields that furnished the contests in five of the races performed in interesting style most of the finishes being of the hard driven variety varietyThe The S N Holman racing establishment had designs on three of the purses but only succeeded in pulling down one Mavourneen landing her dash quite easily but Barracuda and Neddam the other pair to carry the Holman colors had to be content with land ¬ ing in second place placeMavourneen Mavourneen was the easiest winner of the afternoon Her success came in the mile and seventy yards clash in which she was the favorite There was never anxiety on the part of her backers for she rushed into the lead at once and won all the way as her rider pleased Uncle Velo landed second and Tody third There was a wild plunge on Roseate II in this race but he was a bad disappointm Ml and retired quickly from con ¬ tention after going a half mile mileCanyon Canyon finally earned a purse when he led some fairly good ones home in the sec ¬ ond nice in which the higher type of sprint ¬ ing platers mot Sewell Combs landed in second place and Avispa third John Jo ¬ seph and Terminal were the choices here and proved bad disappointments disappointmentsThe The companion race to the closing dash which inaugurated todays card found Little Ammie the favored one but that filly has evidently shot her bolt for she appeared stale and could only land in third place the winner turning up in Dark Hill with The Wit second secondJockey Jockey Doyle was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post in the third race
