Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March II 1903 Racing at New Orleans and Oakland OaklandJockey Jockey Fuller rode two winners today S C BSldreth has offered 7000 for first call on his services The part of Arnold Companys Stable quartered at the Fair Grounds was sold at public auction to satisfy claims of creditors There were two sales one by the civil sheriff as the result of several attachments and tht other a sale of horses in the custody of re iceiver W J Gayle GayleE E E Smathers the new owner of McChes ney is having trouble in finding suitable horses with which to reinforce his small but sehct string His agents having been commissioned to buy crack colts or fillies have searched the southern tracks and though several promisin twoyearolds and Derby candidates have been offered for sale the amount wanted has been invariably too steep for Smalhers1 agents Gilfain the conqueror of McChesney and an eligible for the American Derby was priced and it is understood that B J Cunningham Gilfains present owner set figures of 10000 as a minimum amount for his property Con ¬ sidering that Gilfain started but eigit times last year winning two races one in which he beat McChcsney th price asked is considered by owners and trainers as a highwfter mark which can only be met by millionaires who are not particula about the price of thorough ¬ breds bredsAccording According to James D Cawthorne a Ha ¬ vana citizen the racing plant of the Havana Sports and Racing Association which failed badly in giving a meeting last winter has been acquirs by a new and strong syndicate which prcposis giving forty days of racing with 400 purses and 1200 handicaps It has also se ¬ cured rights and special privileges for a foreign telegraphic service over the HavanaFlorida coast cable which means the furnishing of its trace results to American poolrooms The pres ¬ ent plan is to erect a firstclass race course with a stc l grandstand and a fast track at an outlay of 150000 The work of con ¬ struction will proceed at once whils a list of stakes wlil be presented to horsemen late i the year Agent Cawthorne thinks the period of the projected meeting will run from De ¬ cember 22 to January 30 1904 Havana ia becoming a more favored winter resort for New Yorkers and easterners every year and 1 1 feel assured of a great future for racing at Havana said Cawthorne in an interview The difficulty between James Carruthers and Alexander Shields the owners of Advance Guard has been adjusted Shields is now sole owner of the famous iron horse as aftei a visit to Toronto on Friday he succeeded in purchasing Carruthers interest for 8750 The latter wanted 10000 but findlv came down a peg Advance Guard will therefore not be sold at public auction but will carry Shields colors in all of the big handicaps and other otherevents events for which he has been engaged The settlement of the dispute in such an easy way waywill will be a source of satisfaction to turfmen and followers of racing who had been led to believe that Advance Guard might be shut out of his engagements because of his doubtful regis ¬ tration With the disposal of his interest in Advance Guard Carruthers retires from the turf temporarily at least Shields is now the sole owner of a formidable stable in which Carruthers was formerly interested and which consists of Advance Guard Prince of Mel ¬ bourne Andy Williams Hunter Raine Zo ¬ roaster Young Henry and a bunch of good twoyearolds all of which have been winter ¬ ing well at Bound Brook N J
