EUGENE WAYLAND IS DEAD I Noted Trainer of Exterminator ExterminatorSallys Sallys Alley and Other Stars Succumbs NEW YORK N Y March 10 Eugene AVayland one of the most successful of pres sentday trainers and under contract to Wil ¬ lis Sharpe Kilmer died suddenly at Havre de Grace Friday night of acute dilation of the heart The remains will be shipped to Brook ¬ lyn and the funeral will be conducted from u34 Eastern Parkway ParkwayEugene Eugene Wayland was about 52 years of age I and a native of Missouri His father was a j drygoods merchant and it was the intent of I his parents to make a lawyer of Gene He I cid not fall in with these plans and ran away from home to take to the turf In this the law lost a man among men for in his chosen calling Wayland went far with marked suc ¬ cess cessAfter After going through the hard years of apprenticeship young Wayland emerged a fullfledged trainer and for a considerable time raced in California where he cam ¬ paigned a string of horses for John Brink He was also in the employ of John Mackey for a term and was also with Green B Mor ¬ ris In 1914 and 191ii he trained for Joseph Marrone and followed this with other con tracts until in 1919 he took over the horses of Walter J Salmon It was for Mr Salmon that he won the Futurity of 1920 with Step Lightly and it was he that developed the good mare Careful as well as other horses to bear the Salmon silks silksFollowing Following his engagement with Mr Salmon Wayland took over the Willis Sharpe Kil ¬ mer horses and he raced them with marked success last year and had high hopes for this year He won the Belmont Park Futurity and the second division of the Pimlico Fu ¬ turity with Sallys Alley for Mr Kilmer and placed that filly second on the list of principal money winners of 1922 Exter ¬ minator was the best horse he trained and under his able management the old son of McGee and Fair Empress attained the pin ¬ nacle of his greatness greatnessA A man of sterling integrity and of rare skill in the conditioning of horses there were few trainers who enjoyed more admiration and respect than Gene Wayland He ia survived by a widow
