FREEHOLD TO HAVE RACING Dates Are Awarded for an August AugustMeeting Meeting and Good Sport SportIs Is Planned NEW YORK N Y March 21 It last issue of the Racing Calendar to see that dates had been awarded the Freehold Driving Association of Freehold N J But it is only a driving association in name This name was taken over together with the char ¬ ter of the association and its track recently by Joseph L Donahay and other sportsmen and the meeting to be conducted there from Monday August 27 to Friday August SI will he in every sense a meeting over which the National Steeplechase and Hunt Assjcia tion will have jurisdiction jurisdictionFreehold Freehold for a long time held firstclass harness meetings with an occasional rur ning race sandwiched into the program but the plans of Surrogate Donahay are to make the meetings for the running horse and the thoroughbreds from now on dominate this New Jersey racing ground groundIt It is doubtful if there is a more pictur ¬ esque racing ground of the same size in this country than the Freehold course Built on the side of a valley it Is constructed in a manner that affords a perfect view of the track from any point on the lawn It is of ample width and a golf course that meanders through the adjoining country anil through the infield lends to the beauty The closely cropped turf is as smooth as a lawn in this infield and there are bits of wood and a stream flowing some seventy yards beyond the backstrctch that gives a natural beauty to the surroundings surroundingsSince Since acquiring the property Mr Donahay has built several additional modern stables until he now has 102 roomy stalls on the grounds Other additions are under way anu before this August meeting there will be a steeplechase course added With a broad infield and sufficient adjoining property it will be possible to construct a course that will always be in plain view of the crowd and at the same time take in about every sort of natural hunting country countryMr Mr Donahay has wintered his small string of thoroughbreds at this Freehold track in the care of R V Bobby Boyle and it in the plan to show them under silks in Mary ¬ land
