Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 22 1903 Sunday no racing racingJockey Jockey John Daly son of M J Daly will ride Claude in the Derby at Memphis He has signed to ride for Green B Morris during the eastern campaign but his father has re ¬ served his services for Claude in the 10000 Harlem National Handicap June 6 and the American Derby June 20 20J J P Ross formerly assistant trainer for S K Hughes Company is training the stable of Engman Wilkerson at the Kentucky Association track Lexington Ky The stable is made up of four threeyearolds and five twoyearolds It mil open the season prob ¬ ably at Louisville unless Lexington should decide to hold a sixday meeting In that case the horses will do thsir first racing over the historic old track here The Benning meeting opens tomorrow The influx of horsemen to this track continues August Belmonts southern string including the Benning Handicap candidate Namtor and a dozen highlytried twoyearolds arrived from Garnet S C Thursday They had a quick and satisfactory trip John Whalen has the string in charge Thomas Hitchcocks string of jumpers including Fred Ackennan and Rock Storm are expected from Aiken S C Mr Hitchcocks stable consists of eleven head Thej have been at work at Aiken all winter and should land fit Mr Hitchcock expects to start all his good horses during the meeting at Benninjr Real work was begun at Churchill Downs today for the first time this year The track has dried out wonderfully during the last few days of good weathrr and the various trainers called on their charges for a little more than the usual jogging and gallops that have been the rule during the bad weather and mud Ed Corrigan had his entire stable out the first thing this morning and gave them all some stiff gallops Marta Santa and a three yearold colt were sent threeeighths in forty seconds All the Corrigan string look good and trainer Scott Williams says that they will be ready in time for the Louisville meeting The horses that have bsen campaigned all winter at New Orleans vill be given a long rest which they are enthed to toIn In a letter to Lou Fredericks written from New Orleans Saxi Morton says that he will bz at Benn with a string of ten horses In the string are Hoodwink Dodie S Silver Fringe and a number of others that Morton thinks will have a chance at some of the rich stakes at Benning He has control of Phillips the jockey who gave such promise of develop ¬ ing into a good rider at tha New Orleans meeting and who was exonerated last Tues ¬ day after being suspended by the stewards for a questionable ride on Lady Alberta the day before Phillips will go East with the stable Morton has never raced the stable east of Chicago and if he is fortunate at Washington he is likely to remain in the East at least for the Aqueduct meeting and pos ¬ sibly all summer
