Here and There Thereon on the Turf Horses Ready for Bowie Racing RacingMobiles Mobiles Meeting Seems Suc ¬ cessful cessfulSome Some Equine Pilgrims from Abroad i No matter what the weather man has in I store for the rest of the year spring is here The calendar says so and so does the more I or less warm sunshine The coming of spring meant much to thz various trainers that have candidates for the Preakncss Stakes and Ken ¬ tucky Derby as well as the less ambitious who have an eye on the Inaugural Handicap at Bowie or the Harford Handicap at Havre de Grace These have an importance even if they do not approach the 50000 race The little fellows have been just as eager to have horses ready for the Bowie and Havre de Gracs purses as the bigger fellows have been to be ready for Pimlico and Churchill Downs stake races racesAt At these early Maryland meetings the horses that have been campaigned through the winter will have some advantage in tha matter of condition for the early days of the racing S3ason They will come to the races hard and fit as only actual racing can fit a horse But many of them will be just about ready to go stale from the long campaign and it will not be many days before he fresh horses will dominate dominateBenning Benning horses will undoubtedly have sonit advantage over the horses that were wintered at Long Island training ground for at the track of the old Washington Jockey Club there has been a better opportunity to keep the horses going through the cold months A few that have been making read7 in the pine belt of New Jersey near Lakewood also have been well advanced by reason of tha excellence of these winter training grounds Altogether after the long winter and the snowbound tracks of the North it will be surprising whsn it is found how many horses will be ready for action early in April AprilAn An abundance of early snow is excellent for the horses for the reason that it means that the frost has not gone deeply into the ground before the snow blanket offers a pro ¬ tection It means that when the snow leaves the training grounds will quickly be free from frost and in excellent condition for exercise gallops This has been the record of the past winter and within a few days horss will be able to gallop right along at a pace that will quickly make them ready for the races While the weather conditions were anything but fa6rabe for the opening of the race mezt ing at Mobile Tuesday the sport was begun auspiciouily and the results were particularly formful formfulThis This Ltte track is sure to grow in impor ¬ tance until it becomes a regular link in the early spring racing racingThe The Business Mns Racing Association ol the Alabama city built wisely when they saw to it that their racing would be governed by the best officials available With such an of ficial family it is assured that the racing will have a measure of dignity and integrity that makes for what is best on the turf The fa ¬ cilities on a half mile track are not as flexible as obtained on a mile course but an excellent book has been framed to suit the horses that will fnrnish the entertainment until the end of the month It might be said that a mile track is promised and it is almost a certainty that there will be such a racing ground for Mobile for the racing of 1924 The importation of the young mare Homily from England by Frederick Johnson means a possibly valuable addition to the list of the American brood mares Homily is due to arrive in New York Saturday She is a daughter of St Martin and Rhetoric This young mare was bred to Young Pegasus and it is the intention i of Mr Johnson to mate her with Brown Prince H in this country countryOf Of more immediate racing interest is tha fact that for a traveling companion Homily has a good Jumper that was bought abroad though it has not been announced in whose interests he is being shipped to this country This one is Mythical an old gelding that has abily earned his way both over the hurdles and through the field fieldThis This horse if he ships successfully will un ¬ doubtedly be shown in the early steeplechases in this country and he may prove valuable as I a sample of the jumpsrs that are available in England and Ireland for the American sports ¬ men Joseph E Davis Joseph E Widener and Robert L Gerry have already placed orders for sample jumpers that will be brought over before the closing of the subscription plan that will result in a number being imported but Mythical will beat them to this country and his racing will be of great interest to those who contemplate taking out subscriptions
