DERBY "DARK" HORSE ♦• J. E. Maddens Sandy Hatch Givrp Sparkling Exhibition at Downs. ■ ♦ Keene Bros. Candidates Perform Well — Fisher Horses to Leave for East Shortly. LOCISVILLK. Ky.. April 13.— "Railbirds" at Churchill Downs were given another thr ill this morning when Sandy Hatch, one of John K. Maddens Kentucky Derby eligibles, gave a sparkling exhibition in a mile gallop. Wearing blinkers the son of Ultimus circled the course in 1:42% and was only cantering at the end. This was the second fastest workout of the training season here for Derby candidates and . the colt ran like a real race horse. His fractional time was 22%, 47. 1:13% and 1 :42%. Mac Lir, another of the Madden colts that is expected to run in the big classic of May 19, made also as good time as his stablemate, but his trial was not so impressive. He made the quarter in 23, half in 48. three-quarters in 1:14% and the mile in 1:43. Alice Blue Gown, one of the crack fillies of the Keene Brothers establishment, who is considered a "sure starter" in the Derby, was given a dash at three-eighths, which she completed in 34%. Miss Muffins, a stable-mate of the Lube McLuke tilly. accompanied her, while Donegal, another of the Keene Derby candidates, was sent a mile in 1 :44%. He made the quarter in 24%. half in 51%, three-quarters in 1:18 and mile in 1:44%. Three-eighths was all that CYiittagong was asked to do and the boy galloped him in 39%. imnz WORKS FAST. Trainer C. C. Van Meter cf the K. J. Kelly string gave Skeezix, Derby eligible, and Chatterton a good workout. The horses worked the quarter in 2:1, the half in 48 and the three-quarters in 1 :14%. At the three-quarter post Chatterton was pulled up, but Skeezix "was bent on for the mile, which he ran in 1 :44, eased up. Blinkers were used on Skeezix and the addition of this equipment seemed to work an improvement. Two racers from the stable of Jefferson Livingston. Chicago turfman, were worked out this morning. Buster and Firebrand were sent seven-eighths in 1 :31%. After working three-quarters in 1 :17% Vanishing Boy. R. P. Marshalls tandidato for Derby honors, finished out the mile in 1 :46V5 and was eager to run at the finish. Prince Tii Tii worked five-eighths in 1:05%, and Cnited Verde, stablemate of C. W. Clarks 25,000 beauty, Whiskaway. galloped a mile in 1 :43%. Over at Douglas Park only one Derby candidate was giveti a workout. Fitzrue galloped a mile in 1:19%. making the half in 01 and the three-quarters in 1 :21. Alex Gordon, trainer for "Bud" Fisher, gave his charges an easy gallop. Mr. Gordon expects to leave for the Kast with some of the Fisher racers Friday or Saturday. Grover Band, trainer for Carl Wcidemann, Covington turfman, moved the horses in his carj from Douglas Park to Churchill Downs this morning. Included in the racers in this stable are In Memoriam and Great Jaz. ♦-
