Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 20, 1903 Racing at Aqueduct, St. Louis, Memphis, Oakland and Lakeside. Skilful, one of the promising American Derby candidates, cut a small artery in his race Wednesday. The colt is alright today and was given slow work without bad effect. Giving an exhibition of rare speed and game-ness and out to the last ounce. Pahnbearer, one of the Foxhall P. Keene youngsters, placed the name of the Canarsie Stakes to the roster of stake races and handicaps already credited to his owner. Among the defeated horses the names of Petunia, Ninepin. Nameoki and Contentious stand out most clearly. Nameoki ran second and Ninepin third, but the former with a better rider would surely have beaten the Keene youngster. Palmbearer set the pace all the way and displayed bulldog courage in standing Nameoki off in a long stretch drive. Jockey Gannon outrode Hoar and Palmbearer was a head in front as they crossed the finish line. Ninepin had a length advantage over Contentious and the latter was the same distance in front of Knobhampton. Petunia, after winning the Rose Stakes last Thursday, was expected to win here, but she was never b?tter than fifth and finished in the same position after giving a poor exhibition. This was Aqueducts feature for Monday. The will of the late General W. H. Jackson, for years at the head of the great breeding establishment of Belle Meade, was offered for probate at Nashville Tuesday. General Jackson left all the live stock on the famous farm, including horses, Jersey cattle, deer, etc.. to his son, W. H. Jackson. Young Jackson is made executor of the vast estate without bond. The live stock at Bele Meade includes the stallions The Commoner, Huron, Inspector B., Loyalist and some sixty of the best mares in this country, among the number being Armiel, dam of Rodermond. Armament, etc.; Bandana, Banner Bearer. Enamel. Bessie K., Great Annie, dam of Tammany Chief; Maud Ward, Belle Ward, Pretence, dam of The Pa-rader, etc. There are some four hundred deer on this famous establishment. Sam Hildreth is trying to buy Claude, winner of the Tennessee and California Derbys. He has made an offer to Mr. Daly for the celt. Mr. Daly is now in Connecticut and is to give an answer in the next few days Hildreth wants to point Claude especially for the American Derby, along with Witfull and Topsoil. The combination of sloppy track and poor riding was too much of a handicap for Witfull to overcome and she was the last horse of the six that started to cross the finish line in the Hotel Gayoso Stakes, run at Lakeside today. The race brought out a brilliant field, all Derby hopes, and the winner turned up in Rightful, owned by John W. Schorr, with Pericles second and The Don third, and back of these three in the order named finished Judge Himes. Flocarline and as related Witfull. The latter was also the direct cause for the defeat of Judge Himes and Flocarline. Witfull was outrun for the first three quarters, but coming with a rush in the last eighth her jockey let go her head and she swerved over to the inside fence, shutting off Judge Himes and Flocarline, ruining their chances. The Don went to the front as the barrier went up and led until well past the threejuarters post, where Rightful took the lead, and he was never headed, winning by a length. Pericles ran a good race and got up near the finish to overhaul Th? Don and take second money. It was an allowance race at one mile, for three year-olds, and the New Memphis Jockey Club added ,000.
