MARTINGALESREVIVAL • June Flower Captures the Pimlico Spring Juvenile Stakes. ♦ Champlain Defeats Hildur in a Fast Run Three -Quarters — Wellfinder Takes Race. " r ♦ BALTIMORE. Md., May 7.— That J. S. Cosden has a dangerous Preakness Stakes candidate in Martingale was demonstrated in the sensational performance turned in by the colt in a dash of a mile today. His victory came in a hard drive with Vigil, and Goshawk was third. Martingale picked up 120 pounds and was conceding weight to every starter but Goshawk. It was only through the final quarter that Kummer called on him. Scratches brought the field down to but five starters, the withdrawals being General Thatcher, Tall Timber and Moon-raker. Following but little delay at the post the field was dispatched to a good start. Claver immediately sent Goshawk to the front and Coltiletti went alongside with Barbary Bush, while Golden Rule was racing third. Martingale and Vigil were bringing up the rear. Goshawk continued to show the way through the backstretch, while Coltiletti had Barbary Bush under pressure. Bell found an opening next to the inner rail and sent Vigil through, while Martingale moved up on the outside. At the middle of the turn the field, with the exception of Golden Rule, which dropped back, was closely aligned. Kummer put his mount to a drive and Martingale responded nobly to outfinish Vigil by a short margin at the end. The mile was covered in 1 :38%. Martingale was neglected in the wagering in favor of Barbary Bush and netted a handsome return. June Flower, racing under the colors of tha Xalapa Farm Stable, was returned the winner of the Spring Juvenile Stakes, the ,000 added attraction, which was fourth on the program. Kings Ransom raced into second place, while Relentless was third. Sunayr finished fourth, while four other highly regarded two-year-olds finished back in the ruck. The race was robbed of considerable interest when Sunny Sal failed to leave the barrier, and Johnson did not make any attempt to go after the race. STEEPLECHASE A THRILLER. The Hampden Steeplechase, which was fashioned for horses owned by, or leased by, a member of the Maryland Jockey Club, resulted la a victory for Sea Skipper, racing under the colors of A. H. Morris, while Gimme was second, followed by Courteous. The race produced a thrill when the erratic Mr. Brummel crashed through the wing of the third fence. Sea Skipper outjumped the others, drew away when called on and at the end had a long lead over Gimme. The latter was ridden out to outstay Courteous. The latter was sent to the front following the start, but was then taken back and at the end could not improve his position. June Flower, which is gifted with a sensational burst of early speed and an uncanny alertness at the post, has yet to meet defeat. Today brought her fifth victory. The start was a poor one and Schuttinger rushed June Flower away into a long lead. Parthema, essayed to race in pursuit, but gave way to Relentless before the first eighth had been run. June Flower hugged the inner rail, while Relentless made a wide turn. Kmga Ransom gained steadily under hard riding, while Sunayr closed an immense gup before the stretch was reached. June Flower still had a wide margin through the final eighth, but Schuttinger took no chances and kept her at her work. Kings Ransom finished fast and outstayed Relentless. The latter had something left and held third money safe. The victory netted a return of ,000 to the Xalapa Farm coffers. PLEASANT RACING CONDITIONS. Racing conditions this afternoon continued pleasant. The card was a good one and resulted in spirited racing and, for a Monday, the crowd was large. The Pimlico Graded Handicap. Cass A, was cut down to three starters and J. 11. Stotlers thamplain was an easy winner from Hildur and Prodigious was third. There was but little to the race. Champlnin went right to the front from the start and at no time left the result seriously in doubt. Hildur, although he saved ground on the turns and readily disposed of Prodigious, could not get to the winner. Champlain was an overwhelming choice in the wagering and ran the three-quarters in 1:11--,. lira, R. I. Mill- r supplied the winner of the Pimlico Graded Handicap, .lass R, when Wellfinder won easily from Mark Twain. Third fell to Body Guard. Smallwood. astride the winner, rated Pietrus into early retirement, and although he lost some ground on the stretch turn Wellfinder held Mark Twain safe all through the final eighth.
