GALA INAUGURAL AT . 6a FAIR GROUNDS TRACK AUSPICIOUS START IS MADE j Immense Crowd Present Despite Adverse Weather Conditions Delante Captures the ,000 New Years Handicap in Easy Style 6 3 NEW ORLEANS, La.. Jan. 1. The change of scene from the Jefferson track to the Fair Grounds did not check Dclantes winning streak, for he continued his triumphal progress r and scored the stellar victory of his career this afternoon when he beat homo i fourteen of the best racers that could ba mustered in these parts and won the ,000 ? added New Years Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, featuring the opening of the Fair Grounds meeting. Pressing him closely at the end came S. N. i Holmans Barracuda, a suddenly improved performing one. but a victim of a faulty rido , that deprived him of the ,530 net, the winners i portion. Several lentils in back of the 1 pair came Harry Payne Whitneys Revenge, 1 coupled with Dr. Clark. The fifteen starters gave the starter and his assistants considerable trouble before 1 they were dispatched on their way, but tho 1 send-off found them in good alignment, witli the Greentree Stables Moonraker dashing j into a good lead, followed by Delante and Bradleys Toney. Barracuda was the Avhip-P,G-in forihefiESt half. rqije.vitthe-.posi-tions "of the others virtually the same as , when they began racing on the backstretch. Just before reaching the lower turn Delante moved up to the leader and soon thereafter . took a big lead, with Moonraker steadily dropping back and Bradleys Toney and, Revenge looming up menacingly. Bradleys , Toney gave way in the stretch and at this stage , Barracuda came with a great display of speed and, continuing in fine style, though weakly ridden, forced the Avinner to his utmost and only missed the victory by a scant . head. Revenge held to third place and was considerably in advance of Bradleys Toney. MOONItAKEH QUITS. The disappointments of the race were Flint Stone and Moonraker. The latter quit badly and Flint Stone never figured seriously. An overcast sky and freezing weather developed here suddenly and detracted considerably from the expected record opening of the Fair Grounds this afternoon, but with all the drawbacks and immense throng that included the social and business element of New Orleans braved the inclement weather to give approval and contribute to make the opening a gala one. i The racing was interesting and some of the contests were of the most stubbornly fought order, witli the finishes in some cases so close that no one outside of the judges on a direct line could determine the results. I Betting activities were of the feverish variety, the forty-two odd-quoters being totally inadequate to accommodate those speculatively inclined. President and general manager J. Dymon, Jr., expressed gratification over the successful opening and found in it a barometer that the fifty-five day period would excel any k former meeting held at the Fair Grounds. e "Considering the adverse wreather, our " opening came Tip to our full expectations," 0 said Mr. Dymond. t HINKKYS FINK FINISH. r One of the best contests during the after-5 noon came in the second race when Rinkey, c owned by the Greentree Stable, and ridden by !t Parke, fought it out in strenuous style with is s Boy O Boy, owned by E. 11. Bradley and e ridden by the veteran G. Carroll. Horses l" and riders were forced to show their best skill and the finish found them racing so e closely aligned that none outside of the plac-l" ing judges were in a position to announce tho result. They gave their award to Rinkey. The introductory dash, bringing to the post ;" a band of ten youngsters making their debut z in racing, contained a vast amount of inter-est. it As a contest it was marred because of S the poor start, half of the field being prac-l"" tically eliminated at the outset. Step Along, :e coupled with Son of Tromp, as the rerkins-s Grabner entry, and overwhelming favorites. 10 was lucky to be off with the advance brigade-IS As and, saving ground by staying close to the rn inner rail, succeeded in getting in the lead the ,e when Wheaton, which had gotten away with a a a big advantage bolted at the stretch turn. r- When straightened for the run to the finish Step Along held command, was well under restraint at the finish, though jockey Martin of f was shuffling on the lines some at the end. 31 Seths Treasure Avas always closest in pur-suit after rounding into the stretch and held "1 the weakly ridden Wheaton safe at the finish, it it The AV. Daniels pair. Master Billy and Fear-naught, showed a capital performance and e" will not remain in the maiden ranks long. the he . Continued on twelfth pase." FAIR GROUNDS INAUGURAL Continued from first page. In the secondary handicap, at three-quarters, Second Thoughts, making her first start of the meeting, beat out Triumph and John Finn, after having led for the entire way. She showed a good performance and raced like a good one. John Finn, which attempted to keep pace with her in the early part, weakened badly and succumbed to the hard- ridden Triumph near the end. ! Frcezy Sneczy, which won four races at the Jefferson Park track, began her Fair i Grounds racing auspiciously when she led j home a good band of platers in the sixth race, in which she was a slight favorite. High Speed was second and Miss Meise got up near the end to land in third place. The mile and seventy yards purse brought a qul-ntet of performers to the post and it resulted in victory for Baffles, which managed to outstay Flying Devil, the favorite, to win by a neck. The closing dash was another thriller, Jack Fairman just managing to last long enough j to win by a scant head from Tan Son, with j Repeater in third place. Forty-one oralizers operated in the Palm j Garden.
