Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 26, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. H. Mason, who trains for J. G. Follansbee, is in Kentucky in search of colored stable boys, for which there is a great demand in stables at New York. J. C. Rogers has placed in trainer John Rodcgaps charge his two-year-old bay colt by Hindoo Loneta, by Longfellow, which youngster is regarded as almost priceless by his owner. He is a remarkable colt in two respects. He is the last foal by Hindoo and his dam, a stake winner, is the last filly foal of Longfellow. May S. gave the layers a jolt in the region of their pocketbooks today at Ascot Park, Los Angeles, when she captured the handicap, scheduled as the feature attraction, at the long odds of 40 to 1. Phil Archibald was joint favorite with Cambraceres, but the latter was eliminated directly after the start, when he broke a stirrup, also being cut down. Phil Archibald finished a good second, but might have reversed the result under a stronger rider. This was a hurdle race, at one mile and an eighth. Two great mares have proved barren this year and neither Sallie McClelland nor Bonnie Bird, dam of Grand Opera and Bonnie Lissak, will have foals in 1904. The former is barren to Hawkswick, H. T. Oxnards English horse, and the latter missed to Wagner. Bonnie Bird will be bred back to Wagner, but with the consent of James R. Keene Sallie McClelland will be mated to Ben Brush. This is the second season in succession the great daughter of Hindoo has missed, so the filly, now a two-year-cld, in Gorman and Bauers stable, is Eer last foal to date.
