Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 28, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. Trainer Phillips reports that Fred Cooks horses have wintered splendidly at Churchill Downs. There are at present thirty-seven old and young horses in his charge, but they will be weeded out, and it is not likely that they will take more than thirty with them when they leave Louisville. It is the present intention to have two divisions to the stable, one of which will race at St. Louis, while the other, made up of the pick of the horses, will be campaigned at the Chicago tracks. Phillips confirms the report that John E. Madden recently offered 0,000 for English Lad, but says that the son of Requital English Lady is not for sale. Ethics, after finishing a head in front of St. Tammany in a one mile and twenty yards handicap at New Orleans, was disqualified" by the stewards for carrying the latter wide on the turn into the stretch. Only four started, Ethics being well up with the leaders to the stretch turn, where he took command, but turning for home he carried St. Tammany to the outside ,rail and repeatedly bumped him. The disqualification of Ethics moved Pettijohn into second place and Boaster was awarded third money. Pettijohn was lame when going to the post and quit badly, but was still good enough to finish ten lengths before Boaster. Jockey Hennessey carried off the riding honors by landing Clear the Arena and Clangor home winners in their respective races. W. D. Twymans Ocean Dream was at the top of her form today, practically cantering the entire distance to be winner of the mile handicap at Los Angeles. M. F. Tarpey showed sudden improvement, taking second place from Princess Tulane. The latter passed M. F. Tarpey in the stretch, but he came again and out-gamed the filly. Lester Reiffs Best Man would have been a more serious contender, but jockey Anderson pocketed the colt on several occasions, took him wide on all turns and in general gave a poor exhibition as a race rider. Jockey Willie Higgins, who has been riding in greatly improved form lately, is under contract to S. J. Smith, a Wall street broker, for the coming season. Smith bought Higgins contract from Zach Mulhall last fall for 0,000.
