JAMAICA STAKES GROW Nominations Total 1,252 as Compared with 1,1,93 Last Year. Harry Payne Whitney Leads Nom-j inators with an Entry List of 169 Horses. NEW YORK, N. Y., March 3. That the sport on the Jockey Club tracks will be oS the highest quality from the opening of the season on Tuesday, April 29, is indicated in the patronage accorded the stakes of tho Metropolitan Jockey Club, 1,252 nominations being received up to noon Saturday, an against 1,193 last year. There is always a buoyancy and brilliant quality to the Jamaica spring meeting. Old friends foregather on clubhouse and lawn and everything has that freshness associated with spring. The public, eager to see former favorites under colors in events like the Excelsior and Paumonok Handicaps, and to scrutinize the juveniles, are anxious for tho meeting, which will run for twenty days; Exactly 100 owners made nominations for the eighteen stakes. As usual, Harry Payne Whitney was the leader with 169 entries, followed by the Rancocas Stable, 154 ; Greentree. Stable, 59 ; James Butler, 55 ; J. S. Cosden, 48; Riviera Stable, 43; R. T. Wilson, 41; Giffcrd A. Cochran, 37 ; August Belmont, 3G ; A. J. Contento, 34 ; Lee Rosenberg, 33, and William Daniel, 30. FIFTY-SEVEN IN EXCELSIOR. The Excelsior Handicap, which has the same importance to Jamaica as the Suburban to Belmont Park, and the Brooklyn to Aqueduct, closed with fifty-seven nominations. Conspicuous among the entries are Zev. Untidy. Mad Hatter, Mad Play, Enchantment, Thunderclap, Bud Lerner, Transmute, Brainstorm, Dunlin, Martingale, Rialto, Little Chief and Prince of Umbria. The Paumonok Handicap, which will bo run on the opening day, closed with sixty-one nominations. There is a world of speed eligible this year for this race and the public will have a chance to see such flyers in action as St. James, Sarazen, Dunboyne. Anna Marrone II., Little Celt, Miss Star, Fluvanna, Goshawk, Lord Baltimore II., Flagstaff, Tree Top, Bracadale, Sunference. Blind Play, Ordinance, Spic and Span and Bluemont. Among the seventy-two entries for tho Stuyvesant, for three-year-olds exclusively, are Wise Counsellor, Ladkin, Gipsy King, Nellie Morse, Hourmore, Eaglet, Husky. Quarantine, Sunspero, Thorndale, Nautical, The Vintner, Wild Aster and Fabian. SPRING HANDICAP DRAWS WELL. The Spring Handicap, which is also for three-year-olds, and which has seventy-four nominations, received about the same entries as the Stuyvesant, with a few additions, including Lucky Play, Hard Bargain, Cave Woman, Bontaud, See It Through, II. T. Waters, Lady Diana and Bonaparte. All the good two-year-olds will be out in the Youthful. Among the nominations is the 5,000 Vanidoso, the sensation of tho recent New Orleans meeting.
