v FIX DIXIE HANDICAP DATE Pimlico s 5,000 Feature Will Be Run Saturday, May 3, According- to Announcement. BALTIMORE, Md., March 17. The Dixie Handicap, for three-year-olds and over, with 5,000 added, at one mile and three-sixteenths, will be run on Saturday, May 3, at Pimlico. In interest it will rank next to tho Preakness, scheduled for Monday, May 12, the leading event on the flat of the Maryland Jockey Clubs spring meeting. The Dixie is a revival in name of the old fixture, originally called the Dinner Party Stakes, that featured the opening meeting at Pimlico in 1870, and was won by M. T. San-fords Preakness, ridden by "Billy" Hay-ward, with Major Thomas W. Doswells Ecliptic second and Foster, a famous four-miler, third. The Dinner Party Stakes, as it was then called, was worth 8,500 to the winner. The prospective value of the new Dexie, should twelve or fifteen of the 118 entries go to the post, is over 3,000, with ,000 to the second horse, ,000 to the third and ,000 to the fourth, prizes well worth striving for even in these days. The Maryland Jockey Club thought so highly of the winners of the old Dixie Stakes that it inscribed their names on the panels of the Pimlico grandstand, the list comprising, in addition to Preakness, Harry Bassett, which "walked over" : Hubbard, Tom Ochiltree, Tom Bowling. Vandalite. the only filly on the roster ; Vigil, not the Salmon colt of this name ; Duke of Magenta, Monitor, Gre-i nada. Monarch, George Kinney. Loftin, East Lynne, The Bard, Hanover and Taragon.
