OMAR KHAYYAMS SON • "• Comic Artist Gallops Good Mile at Douglas Park. ♦ . "Bud" Fishers Derby, Preakness and Oaks Candidates to Go East April 15. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky.. April 2.— Comic Artist, which, together with Mr. Mutt is being prepared at Douglas Park by trainer Alex : Gordon to carry the colors of H. C. "Bud" Fisher in both the Kentucky Derby and ; 1reakness Stakes, gave work watchers at that trade Wednesday morning foot! for reflection when he ran a mile without any: effort in 1:16, the fastest time for Ihe distance recorded at either local track this year. The son of Omar Khayyam and Honey Bee, I with Harry Goffe, his regular exercise boy, in the saddle, went about his task like a real ; good colt and gave abundant evidence of , being possessed of the fine staying powers that characterized the performances of his sire in the Kentucky Derby and other stakes; that he won. The colt sailed along at an even pace and was never permitted to have his head. He was in a running mood all the way. The watches caught him in the following fractions: 13, "ors, 39, 52, 1:05, 1:19, 1:::::. 1:46. | Mr. Mutt and Nellie Morse, the latter a Iimlico and Kentucky Oaks candidate, were also sent a mile. The filly galloped the distance in 1:1*. while Mr. Mutts time was 1:50, Like their stablcmate, neither pair were allowed to extend themselves at any portion of the way. Harry Vititoe had the leg up on Mr. Mutt, wliile George Kaon was astride Nellie Morse. Trainer Gordon expressed his gratification over the work of his three crack horses and scouted the opinion held by some local trainers that he is pushing Jhcir preparation beyond their ability. The track at Douglas Park was fast for the gallops and trainer Gordon declared it was in better condition for workouts than it had been since last fall. FOR F.ASTF.RN CAMPAIGN. Gordon has ordered express cars for April 15, when he will make two divisions of the : stable, sending one to lielmont Park and : the other to Pimlieo. The latter division will include among others Mr. Mutt. Comic Artist and .Nellie Morse. The latter is to be started in the Iimlico Oaks, decided May 7 at Pimlieo, and the two colts will make their three-year-old racing debut in the Preakness May 12. After the latter race the three will be returned to Louisville to permit Comic Artist and Mr. Mirt to start in the Derby and the filly to till her engagement in the Kentucky Oaks. Trainer Gordon is confident that Nellie Morse will capture both events for three-year-old fillies. Jockey John Meri-lnee, the stables rider, who has been here all winer with the horses, will accompany lor- i don to Pimlieo and return with him to Ken- : tueky. A return to springlike weather Wednesday morning served to speed up training operations at both local tracks and enabled i trainers to make up for the time lost by the i inclement weather of the past few days. Quite a number of meritorious moves were witnessed at hurchill Downs, where the | track was also in excellent condition and the most impressive recorded was when King Gorin II. and P.ourbon Boy, under the direction of Pete Coyne, were asked to traverse i hree-quartcrs at increased speed. The pair lx-pran together and, with King Gorin II. to the forefront all the way, ran the quarter in :2G. half in :." 2. and three-quarters in 1:18. Maek Carrier was astride King Gorin II. and afterward declared that the son of Golden Maxim and Yankee Tree could easily have covered the distance in 1:14. Garner, who is under contract to Coyne, will have the mount on King Gorin II. in his Derby engagement. If the colt continues to train as he has been doing he will be a sure starter in the big race. Mr. Coyne stated. TRYING TO SKCCRK GARNER. J. S. Ward, who is without a stable rider, is trying to secure Garner to pilot Wise Counsellor in both the 1reakness and Kentucky-Derby and lie will probably succeed in petting the boy for the Iimlico stake, but will have to look elsewhere for a rider for his colt in the Derby. Loth Wise ounsellor and Worthmore were out on the Downs rack Wednesday morning. but were only galloped at a slow pace. They will be givi n tln-ir next trial Thursday morning pro Tided the track remains in its present good condition. I toby Cheatham, apprentice jockey under contract to Harried Pros. and Jones, left the employ of his employers Tuesday after receiving his monthly salary, leaving a note in which he stated he was going to secure a better paying position. Trainers have been warned not to employ the boy. Assistant starter Mickey Harris, who is schooling two-year-olds at both local tracks was busy at Douglas Iark Wednesday morning educating the youngsters in barrier de-lH rtment and among the lot were the horses of Williams Brothers and the band being trained by .lack Flanigan. Harris has ar- I ranged to school at Douglas Iark Wednesdays and Saturdays and at Churchill Downs the remaining days between the hours of 7 and 10 a. in. Starter William Hamilton will assume charge of the work upon his return | from Bowie Monday morning.
