Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 3, 1904 Sunday, no racing. James E. Pepper is to campaign a strong string of two-year-olds in the East. His stable of sixteen will be shipped from Lexington to Morris Park in a few days. « Jockey Lawrence, who has been the premier at Ascot Park, has been engag?d by Pat Dunne to ride in the East. The stars of the saddle in the West at the present time are Helgesen, Full?r, Dominick, Lyne and Sp?ncer, while Shaw, Redfern, Burns and McCue head the list on the eastern tracks. The Tennessee Derby, which has been run annually since 1884, will be contested for tomorrow. Captain Sam Browns formidable representatives, Proceeds and Conjuror, should prove easy victors, as the only other entries are Samurai and Geronimo, both untried colts. It is not the first tima this race has been contested by such a mear?r field and its history is full of surprises as, for instance, when the outsider Buckvidere overthrew two such cracks as Typhoon II. and Algol in 1897. Each passing year brings its crop of absurdly named two-year-olds and 1904 furnishes no exception. Among the names allowed this year by registrar Wheeler can be found such names as: Disproportionableness, Bell? of Hungry Hill, Sardine Box. Little Pearl of Gallantry, Cypripedium, T. Jo, Follies Dramatiques. Lady of Perry County and many others which have no reference to their breeding and are meaningless to the general public. Several Washington reform organiiationa have formally asked the district attorney of the District of Columbia to institute proceedings with the idea of testing the legality of race track betting as carried on at the Benning track. The district attorney has promised to take the matter up, but not until after the present meeting The reform people, led by W. F. Crafts, however, intend to keep after the bookmakers until all betting has been stopped.
