Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 25, 1904. Racing at Morris Park, Hawthorne, Toronto, Latonia, Union and Delmar Parks at St. Louis. La Londe scored a surprise in the Lassie Stakes, the feature race at Hawthorne today. She was entirely overlooked in the betting. Lady Lasca and Aunt Katherine were figured to have the race between them, but neither showed speed and neither got any part of the money, second going to Miss Inez and third to Peggy ONeal. Tomorrow the Brooklyn Handicap will be run with a remarkably high class field of starters. Jockey Tommy Knight is having trouble making weight this year. His work on the road at Latonia Monday made him ill. He is still under contract to Rome Respess and will ride Dick Welles in his high weight engagements this year. When jockey Fuller reaches New York Monday after his ride on Moharib in the Chicago Derby Saturday, he told the racing folk at Morris Park that English Lad is a better colt for a route than any three year old that has shown in the East this year. Tom McDowell, who has the contract on jockey Hicks, says the colored boy Ls the equal of any rider in America. "He has not gone back," says the Kentucky owner. "He has simply been riding bad horses. Wait until be gets the leg up on some of the good ones."
