MONTREAL, Que., June 11.— Racing at Blue Bonnets reached the semi-final day of the spring meeting this afternoon without diminution of the unprecedented popularity it has enjoyed with the Montreal public. Although the card was ordinary this afternoon, it was well patronized and some good contests resulted. After the close here tomorrow there will be an idle day on the circuit of the Canadian j I Racing Associations before the opening at: | Dorval, the other Montreal member of the organization, on Saturday. Joy Smoke earned brackets for the fourth time in five starts this year when he got home in front of a field of three -year-olds in an allowance race, which brought out the best class of horses of any of the contests on the program at Blue Bonnets this afternoon. Captain Haney finished second to the son of Sir Martin — Sweet Brier, which ran in the silks of his breeder, J. E. Madden. Run-ningwild beat the others in a. field of six. The race was at seven-eighths. Captain Haney balked at going to the post, but began well when the field was sent away. He was outrun, however, while Joy Smoke I | and Sunmagne went out to make the pace; ! heads apart, with the ultimate winner on the | outside. Coming into the stretch the leaders went wide in search of the firmer footing, I the portion next to the inside rail being almost i impassable because of the depth of its cushion. Captain Haney went widest of all; I and finished fast, necessitating the use ofi j Langs whip near the end to keep Joy Smoke . going long enough to win by a length. I Hohokus1 caught Comedy tiring in the stretch and drew away from her, winning the third, at a mile. Comedy outlasted Dancer j I for the second portion of the purse. Wallace rode the winner. I I Canadian-breds delayed the start six min-i utes in the third, Peggie S. being one of the chief offenders. When the barrier was sprung, however, she followed closely upon | the pacemakers, went around them into the ! stretch and drew into a lead of three and a1 half lengths at the end of five and a half furlongs. Briar Swe?t, the early leader, out-i I lasted Lord Marcus for second money. i Revolt galloped extremely wide into the stretch, losing much ground, but came again I I and won by a good length from Spanish I Name, with Fiery Flight in third position at the end of the five-eighths for the two-year-olds in the opening race. Romanelli, in the silks of Mrs. T. J. Donahue, rode the winner. E. K. Brysons Cavendish was much the best in the steeplechase. Although he brushed the eleventh fence and went to his 1 knees at the thirteenth and tossed Watkins halfway over iws head, he came en again without relinquishing the lead when his pilot get back in the saddle and won by ten lengths. Flying Frog finished second. Gay Kap was a poor third. McDoran and Celtic Park, the other starters, completed the course. j I Stevens steered Guelph close to the rail in the sixth and he was the first winner in several days to do his racing on that part! He won by two lengths from | ■ Lucky Antoine. with Cragsman, another saver of ground on the inside course, got up in the closing strides to nose out Tra-janus for the small portion of the purse. Guelph was claimed last out by E. K. Bryson, completing a double begun by Cavendish. I A rather common lot made the contest in the final, running a mile and an eighth.
