BRACADALE IMPRESSES Easily Defeats Three Other Candidates for Travers Stakes. First Part of Consolation Stakes to Robert L. Gerrys Dick Whit- tington Only Three Starters. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., Aug. 11. Bracadale, winner of the Withers Stakes for Harry F. Sinclairs Rancocas Stable, holds at least three of the candidates for the rich Travers stake perfectly safe. They are Bob Tail, conqueror of Black Gold, in the Race-land Derby, Mr. Mutt, and Spic and Span. He demonstrated this in the running of the mile and an eighth Travers Preliminary this afternoon. The son of Fair Play easily defeated the three and made weight concessions to each. This was the best race of a thoroughly interesting card that brought out a good Monday crowd. The weather was ideal for the sport, and the track, had dried out considerably from the rain of Sunday. The stake of the day was the Consolation for two-year-olds and it had only three starters with Robert L. Gerrys Dick Whittington the ultimate winner. Five went to the post in the Travers Preliminary and each is a candidate for the big three-year-old prize, the Travers Stakes, to be run . Saturday, the only exception be- ing John E. Maddens Check. MR. MUTTS GOOD FINISH. From an excellent start Laverne Fator at once went to the front with Bracadale, and saving ground all the way he rated him along at an even pace and never was forced to surrender his lead. Spic and Span, in receipt of six pounds, went after the Rancocas colt and through the backstretch was right at his heels. They soon drew away five lengths from Bob Tail, with Mr. Mutt two lengths further away, and Check bringing up the rear. There was little change in this order throughout the mile and an eighth except that the others cut down the lead considerably before the stretch was reached. Then in the run home Mr. Mutt made up ground on the outside and displaced Bob Tail, but Bracadale was home an easy winner by two lengths, while Spic and Span just lasted to save second place from the fast finishing Mr. Mutt by a head. Robert L. Gerrys Dick Whittington was a lucky winner of the first event of the Consolation Stakes which was worth ,430 to the winner. It was the Greentree Stables White Wings that followed him home and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Folly Coat was third. Lucky indeed for Dick Whittington and White Wings that Folly Coat bolted to the outside at the rise of the barrier and was virtually left at the post. After being away poorly she closed a big gap which indicated she was best, and with equal racing luck would have undoubtedly been the winner. The pace was slow and Dick Whittington and White Wings were never far apart with the Gerry gelding showing the way. Right at the end Parke brought White Wings up with a rush and she had the winner driving hard to win by a head. The Consolation is a selling prize run as two events and nominees to the United States Hotel Stakes, the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, Spinaway. or the Hopeful Stakes were the only eligibles. PEDAGOGUE WINS OPENER. The Rancocas Stables Pedagogue was the winner of the opening five and a half furlongs dash for selling plater two-year-olds, but he had to be driven hard through the stretch to catch Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Golden Spire, a son of Golden Broom, which set the pace. R. O. Egans Edisto was third and the others were fairly well up. Golden Spire set a good pace, while both Urbanna and Edisto raced forwardly. Pedagogue was outraced in the early running and Laverne Fator was forced to take him to the outside at the head of the stretch. He caught the leaders in the final sixteenth and was going away at the end. The steeplechase of the day was for non-winners of two races through the field and it resulted in a spirited duel between Mrs. F. A. Clarks Rock Bass and Joseph E. Wide-ners Parlays while P. T. Maloneys Gray-lette was a distant third. Seven started and Joseph E. Davis Rampage was the only ono that did not finish. He went down at the fifth jump with Manning, but fortunately the rider was unhurt and was on his feet instantly. After Stockmar and Rummel had set the early pace and tired Cheyne took Roclc Bass into the lead and once in front he never surrendered that position. Dolly Byers was right after him with Parlays when the real racing began and then it was that Cheyne was guilty of some tricky riding when ha repeatedly crossed the Widener jumper without actually hitting him. Byers saved ground all the way and was lapped on Rock Bass at the last jump but Mrs. Clarks jumper proved gamest in the final drive and was a length to the good at the end, with both Continued on sixteaiitu page. Skyscraper, which races for the Greentree Stable, under a clever ride by Ivan Parke, was an easy winner of the one mile fifth race for selling platers when he led home the Salubria Stables Scoop, with Charles Miles Kellerman third. Parke permitted Brothers to go into a good lead with Scoop and was content to rate Skyscraper along until nearing the head of the stretch. There he made his move and an eighth from the finish he had caught the tiring pacemaker and passed him to win going away. Kellerman also finished fast but Scoop lasted long enough to save second place by half a length. The last race on the program was a three-o.uarter mile dash which brought out seven fast fillies, and it fell to the Marrone Stables Anna Marrone II., Avith W. R. Coes Lady Belle second and the Greentree Stables Leojiardess third. After the finish Brunner, who rode Lady Belle, lodged a claim of foul against McAtee, who rode the winner, but it was not allowed. He charged that McAtee had ridden him close to the rail in the stretch, but as a matter of fact he had tried to come through on the rail when there was no room. In this race Laverne Fator was guilty of a wierd ride on Miss Star and after finding all the trouble possible for her, his finish was weak. 1
