Miss Caltha Races Speedy Sprinters Into Defeat Aslilin First in Ciose Finish. : r TOLEDO, Ohio, Aug. 27. An upset came with the running of the Directors Purse, sixth and feature race at Fort Miami Park this afternoon, when J. W. ONeills Recommendation, an outsider in the mutuels, was returned a handy winner from Gay Boy II. and Be Good, with Zorro, the early pacemaker, just outside the money. Recommendation raced close up to the stretch, took command an eighth out and drew clear near the end. Racing in her best form, Miss Caltha took some speedy sprinters into camp in the fourth race, after leading throughout. She was hard pressed at the end, however, to stall off Humble. Glenn repeated this in the fifth, holding Star Red safe for the entire way. Assume came from the rear to get third. Finis Gloriosus and Bright Trash also led throughout in their respective races, and the latter returned the largest dividends of the meeting. It marked her first victory in a year. Tho concluding dash resulted in the best finish of the meeting, inches separating the placed horses. Ashlin, Melancholia, Mallow-mot and Happy Moments appeared to have the issue between them from the press stand, but Lucky Pearl was placed third, although she appeared to be beaten off. P. Reuter was a visitor today, en route to Cleveland, where he will take up St. Donard and ship to Havre de Grace. He shipped Soggarth Aroon from Chicago to Havre de Grace yesterday and sent T. T. Motts Jewell V. D. and Attilia to Maple Heights. J. A. Parsons, acting for D. Parsons, claimed Humble out of the fourth race for ,200. At private sale today A. K. Miller sold to Mrs. S. C. Denfcam Machiavelli and Monsoon and T. Edwards will train the pair in the future. Machiavelli raced in the interests cf his new owner today. Jockey C. Eames plans to leave here tonight for Niagara Falls, Ont. William Harris will do the starting at the "Wheeling, W. Va., meeting during the first week of September. The other officials will be A. G. Leonard, presiding steward; C. j Stands and S. S. Bender, judges; racing secretary, S. S. Bender. A split horse train will leave here on Saturday night conveying a hundred head of horses for Wheeling to race during the fair. J. A. Parsons will ship his string from here to Maple Heights Park, Cleveland, at the close here on Monday.
