rGREAT FRIDAY CROWD j Surprisingly Large Attendance Sees Off-Day Program. Well-Backed Miss Meise Beats ; Billy Star in Feature Miss j Cerina Takes Third Race. j HATVTHORXE RACE TRACK, Aug. 20. A handicap -with ,500 added at one mile and a sixteenth for the higher grade platers Ifeaturcd Hawthornes card this afternoon in a monetary way and it brought to the post some fairly good ones and furnished a spectacular contest with victory going to the well Ibacked Miss Meise which got up in the last strides to down Billy Star, Belphrizonia following closely in their wake. It was quite a task for the favorite to get .up in time to land the victory and her j journey through the stretch was accompanied ;by lusty encouragement from her supporters. , Billy Star continued to hold to the lead un-itil the last twenty yards where the filly man-aged to get her head in advance and keep .it there to the end. Belphrizonia also closed la big gap and was going strongest at the finish. Had McDermott timed his final drive better the Swenke filly might have won. The early stages were dominated by Fretwell but he gave way steadily after three-quarters had been run. There was sharp activity about Kings Ransom but he was handicapped by poor riding and retired after racing prominently to the stretch, t An off day proved better than expected and some excellent sport was noted in spite of the mediocre performers engaging in a ma-j jority of the races. The crowd was again of j record proportion, by far the biggest midweek attendance of the entire meeting. CANNON SHOTS DOWNFALL. The incompetent Ellis "was responsible for the downfall of Cannon Shot in the supplementary feature at one mile. Miss Cerina was the victress here and her success was entirely due to the good ride she received from Earl Pool. Alert at the post, he got her away fast, and saving much ground nursed her along steadily and caused her to last just long enough to get home in advance of Everglade. The latter was a nose better than Pricemaker at the finish, with Cannon Shot several inches further away. Cannon Shot was all over the track and when going fastest after having lost much ground in the stretch Ellis turned his head loose, with ithe result that ho was off stride at the finish. I The second race brought to the barrier a collection of the more lowly at the course iand they came to the finish in a. compact .group, with Bessio Leighton heading the jprocession several inches before Isaman, with Mark Denunzio, Eddie Jr. and half a dozen of the nearest so closely grouped that it was difficult to separate them. Bessie Leighton was an outsider and showed a good performance. The introductory dash brought ten youngsters to the barrier, with Try Again the vic-Itor, having parted with the others in the last eighth to win handily from Boo Boo, an overlooked one, and Stay On finishing in third Iplace. Star Sweeper, Pacier and Sam Men-gel were among those given good consideration in the race but they never figured prominently. MUSKALLONGE PAILS. The fifth race brought out an ordinary band witli Muskalionge the favored one but the best he could do was to land in second iplace, Ann M. beating him to the finish by half a length with Poppye in third place. The trio of placed ones were lucky at the start. Tlieo raced as if best but he was away slowly and in addition Montgomery jrode him faultily and could not prevent him from swerving. Ann M., the winner, was claimed by Hcnius and Earl at a cost of ?1,500. f Try Again, the winner of the first race, was another to be transferred by the claiming route, going to E. E. Major at a cost of ,200. Jockeys Boganowski, Rodriguez and Kennedy terminated their riding here, being suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the starter for disobedience at the post. The closing race furnished an upset by the victory of Round Robin which won easily after having shown the way for practically the entire trip. He was subjected to a hard drive in the early stages, first by Plus Ultra which gave way in the stretch and in the final sixteenth "Westwood came with a great rush but Round Robin held on in game style and had a length advantage at the finish. tXorick performed well and was never farther back than third place. 1 Plus Ultra was supported extensively, his second to Jouett in track record time resulting in the backing for liim. His supporters .however failed to take into consideration that in his previous start he was ridden by Stutts. Quite a difference between that rider and Ellis who rode him this afternoon. 1 Jockey Walter Anderson will leave Mon- day for Belmont Park to ride for his former employer, J. P. Richardson.
