PROVES FALSE ALARM Wild Plunge on Clever Seth Causes Excitement at Aurora. Joy of His Backers Short Lived, Colt Failing Dismally After Going Three-Quarters. AURORA, 111., Sept. 22. There was considerable excitement and a near panic among the layers when the public plunged on Clever Seth in the fourth race as if the result was all over but the shouting, backing him down from 4 to 1 to 7 to 5, that being the best obtainable at post time. There was great elation among his suporters when he went right out with Battle Shot, which rushed into the lead at the start. Their joy was short lived, however, for Clever Seth was done for after going three-quarters and he quit so badly that he failed to get any portion of the purse. The winner turned up in Belle Amie, while Battle Shot and Mac O Boy finished second and third respectively. Today was an ideal one for racing. The skic3 were bright and clear, with a warm sun to take tho chill out the air. The track was wonderfully improved over that of Saturday and should be almost fast for Tuesdays program. The third race of the day was a runaway for the heavily supported favorite Sir Lawn-fal. Spods was the one to be second, with a long shot, Hambone, third. Off in good order. Chiavetta sent Sir Lawnfal right to tho front. Koellia was the one to follow him with Spods in third place. Kirah was leading the remainder of the field. Sir Lawnfal increased his lead as he went along and was three lengths in front turning for home. Ho was an easy winner by six lengths. Spods was second and Hambone third, three lengths in front of Kirah, which was allowed to race in the deep going all tho way. ONTARIO HOME FIRST. Nine ordinary sprinters answered the call in the second race, a five-eighths dash. C. Koerners Ontario proved best, winning by a length and a half with "Walter H. Pearce a length in front of Lubeck. There was a nine minutes delay at the barrier due to the fractiousness of "Walter H. Pearce. However, they were off in good alignment and Ontario was the first to show out of the bunch with "Walter H. Pearce second and Ralco in advance of the remainder of the field. Turning into the stretch Ontario was enjoying a three .and a half length lead with Walter H. Pearco a length in front of Lubeck, which had moved up to third. They finished in that order Ontario a length and a half in front of his opponents. The winner of the fifth race a three-quarters sprint, was furnished by T. E. Crist when Simplicity got up in the final strides to beat "Viennese by a nose. Baleful!, the early pacemaker, was third. After a brief delay at the post they were sent away in goor order. Balefull was the first to show with Crescent second and Rapid Stride third. Simplicity was leading the others. Rapid Stride and Crescent fell back at the stretch turn and there was a general closing up. In a thrilling finish Simplicity just got up in time to nose out "Viennese at the finish. Balefull was the one that finished third. Spontaneous, which attracted much support, never had a chance under Taylors riding. OUTSIDER ntTEY SCORES. The opening race, a five and a half furlong dash for two-year-olds, fell to the outsider, Huey, after a spirited stretch duel with Glory and Sorline, the latter showing improvement with blinkers added to his equipment, finishing third. It was a beautiful finish. No time was lost at the barrier and the start was a good one. Glory went to the lead with Black Dinah and Huey right after, with Sorline leading the others. They ran that way to well into the stretch where Huey took the lead, Glory dropping back to second and Sorline moving up. The concluding race of the day fell to Proceeds after a hard drive with Molinero. Hasty Miss was the one to be third. The start was tho worst of tho meeting, Bygone Days being eliminated when the barrier was released, although he is a notorious bad actor. Ho was inclined to behave today and one of the assistant starters, not content to see him behave, started to abuse him with a bull whip, which aroused the old fellows anger so much so that when the start came he was crowded to such an extent that Holloway had to pull him up to keep from going down. Polychresty was the one to cut out the pace, with Molinero second and Proceeds third. They han this way to the stretch turn, whero Polychresty showed signs of tiring and Gormley sent Proceeds to the lead. It was a three-horse race from there on. Proceeds getting the verdict by a neck, with Molinero a nose in front of Hasty Miss for second place. On Tuesdays program the fourth race is the Robert Bacon Cigar Claiming Handicap. Al Spellman, owner of the above company, will givo the winning jockey" fifty cigars, while 100 cigars goes to the jockey riding the horse which finishes last.
