REVIEW OF NEW YORK RACING SEASON OF 1924 9 G , Over ,000,000 in Stakes and Purses Distributed by Metropolitan Racing Organizations Rancocas Stable Largest Money Winner on Circuit With 08,925 to Its Credit Mother Goose Tops the Horses 5. C. Hildreth Great-est Number of Winners J. Maiben Carries Off the Saddle Honors Racing prospered in New York this year and was replete with interesting features, but as a field it gave owners of winning horses an aggregate of but littb more than it did in 1923, 7,724 more, to ba exact. In fact, New York about reached the limit of its productivity in 1923 and no great variation is now to be expected, unless Buffalo should, establish a new track and help swell the annual returns. However, what New York turns over to successful owners annually is a plentiful sum total. The American turf would be in a sorry condition without it, as was experienced not so many years back. A noticeable feature of the years results is that the "Westchester Racing Association gave less money in 1924 than it did in 1923. Part of this is accounted for in the greater sum added io the Papyrus race of last year, in comparison with the Epinard race of this year. There was also a falling off in daily average distributed from the 820,095.48 of last year to the 18,368.77 of this year. To compensate for this falling off at headquarters, every other racing organization in New York shows a gain over 1923 in total distribution and in daily average distribution, all combining to show a pleasingly satisfactory condition of racing and its affairs in the Empire Slate. Despite the Belmont Park feature referred to, the big track held its own in its accustomed leadership of the New York tracks. Its total of 8606,170 for twenty-six days oi racing speaks for itself. It is a great race track. It is the scene of great racing in each recurring year. It j deserves its leadership and will continue to hold it. Hildreth, won the immense sum of 08,925 over the Xew York tracks. Horses that carried the colors of that powerful racing confederacy j finished first in seventy-one races, second ; iii fifty-five and third in forty-eight Begin- j ning at Jamaica in the spring, the Bancocas Stable accounted for fourteen races and 5,- j 230, at Belmont Parle fifteen races and j 2,730, at Aqueduct six races and. 9,300. at Empire City eight races and ,355, at j Saratoga nine races and 6,225. Then came . the fall campaign, starting at Belmont Park, where seven victories yielded 2,445, four! at Aqueduct 1,130, five at Jamaica 5,200 and three at Empire City ,310. Mad Play was the biggest winner for the stable, while Zev, which was responsible for the Bancocas worlds record of winnings in 1923, only won ,700 this year over the Xew York tracks. H. P. Whitney was second to the Bancocas Stable in winnings over the Metropolitan circuit The master of Brookdale Stud had a large and formidable band of young horses in the racing of this year, and it was chiefly j due to the excellence of his two-year-olds that the stable prospered. Over the New York-courses the Whitney horses won thirty-five races and G1,570, the excellent filly, Mother Goose, being responsible for 1,S55 of that sum. Major August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, by virtue of the prowess of Ladkin and Ordinance, enjoyed one of tho most successful racing years since before the war. He was the third and the last of the owners to win over 00,000 over the New York courses this year. Altogether his horses won twenty-three races and 09,790. The Belair Stud has good reasons for feeling satisfied with the results of its campaign over the New York courses, twenty-four victories bringing 1,915 to its coffers. Among the other ones who figured prominently were W. Daniel, with 8,100 ; Greentree Stable, 1,105; J. Butler, 0,G70 and Ward and Burton, 9,910. Mad Play, from the Bancocas Stable, was another big money winner, over the various courses of the Jockey Club. His winnings amounted to 5,490, victory in . the Belmont Stakes alone netting him 2,8S0. The brilliant but unfortunate Ladkin won seven races and 9,-255, the Broadway, Carlton, Dwyer, Edge-mere and International Special No. 2, baing the stake features in which he scored notable successes. The smashing two-year-old, Master Charlie, a claimant for the juvenile crown of 1924, won four races, including the rich Hopeful Stakes, and 9,225. Aga Khan, the Lawrence Bealization winner, and a. prominent factor in other stakes, accounted for six races and 2,700. Wise Counsellor won three races and 3,210, Sarazen six and 1,-215, Sunny Man four and 0,175, while the busy Priscilla Buley won a greater numbar of races than any other on the Metropolitan circuit, accounting for ten and 0,600.
