TRAINER DUKE GOES EAST G. A. Cochran Horses Are Unsound Owner Advised to Purchase New Thoroughbred Stock. LEXINGTON. Ky., Dec. 20. William Dukfc, who recently returned from France to take charge as trainer of Gifford A. Coch-, rans racing stable, departed today for the East, and, after spending the holidays with relatives at Wellsville, N. Y., will go on to New York City. Mr. Duke says that he found the Cochran horses in a very depleted condition, and that he has already advised the owner that it will be necessary to buy others if his colors are to be properly represented in the racing of 1923. There are twenty-two horses in the string and sixteen of them are unsound, though some of them may be patched up sufficiently to get to the races for a time or two each next year. Mr. Duke, while here, was the guest of -Colonel and rhil T. Chinn at "Old Hickory," their country home. The racing folk here told Mr. Duke how genuinely glad they are that so capable a trainer as he is has decided to return to his native land after such a successful career in France.
