Smith, who trains the horses of Walter M. Jeffords and Mrs. Jeffords, Avas a recent visitor New York, Avith Mrs. Smith. lie camo up from Berlin, Avhere the horses are in winter quarters, to attend to. some personal business and complete the purchase of a home at Hollis, 1. I. The horses, Mr. Smith said, look avcII and arc in the best of health. AVhile he Avas a hit disappointed at the Avay By IlisselE finished out his racing in Maryland, he said the son of Man o "War and Colette Avas in excellent condition and he has high hopes for him next year. lie has a likely lot of yearlings he is making ready for the two-year-old offerings next year and at this time he expects more of the lillies than of the colts. Several of them have shown excellent trials. The Jeffords silks Avill not be shown during the winter, but there Avere some sold out of the stable that will be raced. Three fillies, one by Golden Broom, and two others by Star Hampton, Avere sold to A. Swenke and they are intended for early two-year-old racing, probably at Miami. Aversion, now racing at New Orleans, is another that Smith sold. This Avas one of his own and he Avas pleased to note that she showed a good turn of speed in her first race. She had not "been trained by Smith. Goldilocks and Stormalong are two others that were sold for Avinter sport. Mr. and Mrs. Smith Avill return to Berlin for Christmas and spend the remainder of the Avinter at that Maryland farm. Gwyn Tompkins also is at Berlin Avith the horses of Samuel D. Kiddles Glen Ttiddlo Farm. Mr. Smith reported that those horses are also doing Avell in the Avinter retirement and, as usual, it is the intention of both, sablcs to lurve a consignment ready for the early racing season- in Maryland.
