ELECTORS FIFTH WIN j S. N. Holman Youngster Captures j Christmas Handicap. Jockey Harvey Rides Three Winners Parke Sides Wild Aster to Victory. i i NEW ORLEANS. La., Dec. 25 The per- sistent Elector, carrying the S. N. Holman j colors, scored his fifth victory of the meeting when he won the Christmas Handicap, the feature of the best day of racing at Jefferson .1 Park this season. The race carried a value j of ,170 net to the winner. j Elector had his sablemate, Nassau, coupled with him to help in case he found the tak 1 of winning too difficult. Elector, with a good : display of speed, and at home on the rough ! ; and heavy track, moved into a good lead at once. Hay restrained him just before reach- . ing the stretch and it enabled his closert pur- 1 suers to gain on him, but in the stretch he , held his lead courageously. Rinkey stood a hard drive well and Red Wingfield, which ultimately finished third, closed a big gap in ; the last eighth. Corinth and Ballot Brush ; were expected to figure prominently in the running, but they found the going difficult and retired early. Electors steady improve- ; ment is bringing him rapidly to the front, j He has been raced over all sorts of tracks; and at different distances and has been a consistent performer. An immense holiday throng attended Jef- ! ferson Park this afternoon in spite of the intense cold that prevailed. Several lght snow flurries were a source of wonder to many. Many of the more prominent persons in these parts attended and they seemed to enjoy the occasion and took a keen interest in the racing. 3IARYRY IN LIMELIGHT. Jockey Harvey was much in the limelight during the afternoon and he landed three of the afternoons winners. Ever Bold, victor ; in the sixth race, did not require much of an j effort on his part, although he came close to getting himself into trouble for his action in striking jockey Liebgold with his whip. The latter, astride Soggarth Aroon crowded 1 him a trifle while they were racing around the first turn. Soggarth Aroon, going in his best form, moved into a long lead in the; first half mile, but Ever Bold came away from him with ease in tne stretch. John Finn, the only other starter in the race, was always outrun. Jockey Parke finally managed to break into the winning column when he brought home Wild Aster in tha fourth race, a three-quarter -mile affair. Wild Aster was coupled with Leopardess as the Greentree Stable entry. Parke had him away well and hustled him into the lead at once. He seemed an easy winner after reaching the stretch but at this juncture Bradleys Toney, which had been far back, came with a rush and forced : Parke to his best effort. Wild Aster finished j gamely and beat Bradleys Toney at the end j by two lengths. Leopardess finished in third place. j The closing race, at one mile and a sixteenth, brought to the post some good platers, with Prince K. and Richelieu most favcred. Prince K. outclassed the others and, after trailing for the first half mile, finished with a rush and won with much in reserve. Van Patrick showed good speed to take second place, while Richelieu-finished third. Tender Heth was racing gamely and well until his rider legan whipping him hard, with the result that the colt resented the unnecessary punishment and sulked. SMUTS DISAPPOINTS. The mile and three-sixteenths race produced a big upset when Smuts, an outstanding favorite, failed to finish better than third, and Superbum, a heretofore dismal disappointment, showed sudden improvement and won in easy fashion. Scobie gave her different handling than he did in her preceding start. He was alert at the barrier and rode her vigorously and not in the listless : manner as formerly. Superbum also liked the heavy going that prevailed and she came away in the stretch after a sharp brush with Zanzibar, the pacemaker. Smuts raced prominently for five-eighths, but thereafter he tired badly and it took his best efforts to , outstay Pensive for the shorter portion of the purse. There was some delay getting the field to the post due to Ernest B.s absence. Ho was finally ordered withdrawn and the few scattering wagers made on him ordered returned. Another disappointment of the afternoon was Gipsy Flyer. He has been made favorite . repeatedly with always the same result that he has been among the also rans. He s was in with seven others of the ordinary variety . including Bad Luck, probably raced more often than any other horse at the track. Bad Luck showed a decided liking for the going that prevailed but only managed to win by a short margin from Sincere with Doc . McMahon in third place. The finish was close and caused considerable enthusiasm. . Continued 011 twelfth page. ELECTORS FIFTH WIN Continued from first pase. . Flying IDcvil Avas made faA-orite in the opening race but he made a poor showing and failed to get any part of the purse. The winner turned up in Wrangler on Avhich Harvey rode A-igorously and managed to get a slight adA-antage at the start. He liked the going and Avas always in adA-ance by a good margin. Goldfield finishing with a rush outstayed Yoshimi for second place. Flying DcAil flattered by staying well up for half a mile, but thereafter he tired and AVeiner rode him listlessly in the stretch.
