Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Dec. 31, 1904 Racing at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Presiding judge Hamilton is still confitcd to his room at Los Angeles. Ilis case is more severe than his physician anticipated. Presiding judge Joseph A. Murphy and Ed W. Maginn, who is to be associate judge and racing secretary at Essex Park, arrived at Hot Springs toduy. John W. Schorr and James Arthur wired that their horses were on the way to Hot Springs from New Orleans. The refusal some days ago of he New Or leans stewards to allow H. M. Masons Flam-mula to start because of an alleged arrear of forfeits developed a peculiar angle. The forfeit against Mason dates back to the regime of the old Turf Congress and applies to a horse called Rebos that Mr. Mason says was owned at that time by a Mr. Carpenter. Mason alleges that he was merely the trainer. The forfeit was of small moment, but Mr. Mason refused either to pay it or allow any intervention on the part of his friends. He will be unable to race his horses here until action has been taken by the Western Jockey Club. Following the purchase of the Union Park race track equipment, lease and option for ,000 at the receivers sale today at St. Louis, Mo., announcement was made by the new owner, Jordan W. Lambert, that he would apply for racing dates at the meeting of the Western Jockey Club next Monday. Speaking of the purchase Mr. Lambert said : "I regard the purchase first and foremost as a real estate investment. There are 100 acres in the tract. The lease is at IS,000" yearly and there are seven more years for the lease to run, with the privilege of purchase at the end of that time for 50,000. The improvements are well worth the price I have paid. The tract is the only large body of land of its sort now lying in such an advantageous position. Hence it will improve by the time the option expires. If wc can obtain racing dates, which we will aply for next Monday, the property may be come self supporting and may become a source of profit.
