t I I I MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED Plenty Thoroughbreds Available for Huntington Meeting. • Special From Havana Brings 1J8 Campaigners — Good Field for the West Virginia Derby. HUNTINGTON*. W. Va., March 31.— With the arrival of a special horse train of ten express cars from Havana, Cuba, the colony of thoroughbreds now o.uartered at the local Fair Grounds course awaiting the opening of the thirteen-day meeting of the West Virginia Jockey Club Saturday, numbers in excess of five hundred. In addition to the Cuban shipment, which consisted of 158 horses, another car load containing the extensive string of Eugene Lutz, also arrived here Saturday from Miami, Fla.. making a total of nearly two hundred horses which have been shipped here from the beautiful Hialeah race course. Other arrivals Saturday included sixteen head from Tijuana, which will be raced in the colors of the Fort Garry Stable, formerly known as the Frozen North Stable, which will remain in charge of C. C. Emmert, Western horseman. The New Orleans contingent, which has been arriving during the week, includes the stables of B. A. Jones, John Randolph, G. W. Church. W. Cain, A. Pelletiere. H. L. Munson. R. McKeever, F. Confrey. C. Houbre, J. H. McCoole, G. Leighty, It. Scully, C. Locke and others. Since arriving here the sensational two-year-olds. Captain Seth, Major Seth, Dolly Seth. Bathilde Seth and Martha Roos. which raced with a large measure of success at New Orleans in the colors of B. A. Jones, have been the center of considerable interest. Mr. Jones reports that his juveniles as well as the aged horses in his stable have adapted themselves surprisingly well to their new surroundings and are now undergoing an intensive course of training. Indications that the third running of the West Virginia Derby, which will be decided on Saturday, April 11, will attract a large field of good three-year-olds to the post, became evident during the week, when a number of eligibles made their appearance, including Brilliant, Lord Vargrave. Sombre, Gad. Belpre, Rosamond. Starmatia, Cassie Ann, Channel, Compact, Billy Welch, O. C. Hutchinson and several others. Word was also received that Mrs. T. J. Reagan will ship her good colt Thundering here for the event from New York, where he was shipped following the close of racing at New Orleans. «
