Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April I, 1905 Racing at Washington, D. C, New Orleans, Memphis and San Francisco. "Father Bill" Daly has lost his gelding Colonsay. The horse contracted pneumonia on his way from Hot Springs to Banning. John A. Drake, through Enoch Wishard, bought two colts from Dan OBrien. They are Strong Bnw and Ireland, the former by Good-rish and the latter by Contestor. Something like 350 mares were served by the stallions at Elmcndorf Stud last year and to date fifty of them have foaled. Of these forty eight are alive and thriving. Evan-thes colt by Mimic died last week and one other mare dropped a dead foal. Ideal weather brought out a big crowd at Benning today. Davy Johnsons colt Roseben scared out Monte Carlo and Buttons from the third race and, as the event seemed at his mercy, Mr. Howland put on an extra race. Roseben did not win, but Santa Catalina had to nearly equal the track record to beat him. Th_ match race between Gold Rose and Floral King was the feature of the card at City Park, New Orleans, this afternoon. It drew a large crowd and was, at its finish particularly, an interesting contest, but it came near having a serious ending. Jusf, as Gold Rose reached the sixteenth post a cur dog ran out on the track in front of the filly, but in some miraculous way she escaped falling. Jockey Kelly claimed that Gold Rose struck the dog, but to the spectators it looked as if she missed him. The filly was the leader throughout, her advantage for most of the way being six lengths. Near the finish Floral King began to creep up and he just missed catching the filly by a nose. He carried 111 pounds to Gold Roses 94. "Frisco" Gardner, owner of Floral King, was very much dissatisfied with the result. He claimed that Gannon lost the race at the start. Gold Rose outbroke Floral King and was a length in front before they had taken three strides.
