AVidenrrs Hamadan Shows to Good Advantage — Madden Siring Is Going East Tomorrow. » LOUISTILLE, Ky., April 15.— Our General, the strapping son of Sir Martin — Astrology, which is scheduled to carry the silks of William Ziegler, Jr., in the forthcoming renewal of the Kentucky Derby, made his first appearance Wednesday morning on the Churchill Downs track. The colt arrived last Monday from winter quarters and his appearance with jockey Clyde Ponce up caused some commotion among the large and interested crowd of work watchers that lined the back stretch. The great majority had never before seen the strapping chestnut colt, and they were anxious to obtain a good view of him at close range. He was the cynosure of all eyes as he cantered around the track and elicited much favorable comment because of his splendid appearance. Our General is somewhat of the type of Quatrain, rugged and well muscled, but a trifle taller than the latter. He moves along with a well regulated stride and with all the eagerness of a high- class racer. If he fails to develop into one of the star three-year-olds of the year, many expert critics at the Downs will be sorely disappointed. Nothing was demanded of Our General in the way of speed Wednesday, as trainer Speirs wants to freshen him up a bit before demanding rigorous work of him. According to present plans, the colt will be given a fast gallop Thursday by being sent a half mile at good speed and the following morning will be called upon to show same speed at one mile. He is credited with possessing a high order of speed and has abundant staying powers. It is freely predicted that after Our General shows a few good trials there will be a marked revision of opinion regarding the probable outcome of the rich fixture. Although weather and track conditions were well nigh perfect for speed tests, train- ers of Derby candidates did not avail them-, selves of the opportunity offered to send their charges along in ambitious works. They contented themselves with work of a less pretentious order. J. E. Wideners Hamadan showed to good advantage when Ham Keene sent him three- Continued on thirteenth paj;e. 1AKES FIRST APPEARANCE Continued from first page.? quarters. The big stables that wintered at Churchill Downs, and which are intended for a campaign on the eastern Canadian tracks, are commencing to pull up stakes and they will soon take their departure for their new fields Of activity. The band of two-year-olds that will carry the colors of J. E. Madden on the metropolitan tracks this year will he the first to leave. They will leave Thursday morning in two palace cars with Belmont Park as their destination. William "Chuck" Walker, who has trained the Madden stable for many years, will MCatfa ■• in charge of the outfit. Madden was at the Downs WVdncsday morning to issue final orders regarding shipping details and to arrange to send a coup!e back to Hamburg Place. These have not conn- up to exi ectations.
