Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 16, 1905 Sunday, no racing. The Oakland officials have decided that Tom Cooks lightweight jockey, W. Kelley, is too small to ride. Woodford Clay has in his stable a two year-old filly which is a sister to Agile, winner of the Tennessee Derby. Superintendent Myer has the Harlem track, Chicago, almost ready for galloping. The stables have received their spring cleaning and the infields and lawns are in charge of the gardeners. The first large stable expected is that of E. E. Smathers, S. C. Hildreth already having thirty-six stalls and his cottage ready for occupancy a week from tomorrow. Though it is but three days to the opening of the Tennessre Breeders meeting at Nashville and the running of the Cumberland Derby, there is considerable uncertainty as to the number of horses that will contest for this prize. It may be put down as certain that W. W. Darden will start Ivan the Terrible, that Layson will represent T. P. Hayes and that either McClellan or Lady Savoy, possibly both, will carry the colors of Wilham Gerst. Beyond this there is much doubt. E. R. Bradley may start one of his three, Scotch Irish, ; Palm Tree and Bradleys Pet. Captain S. S. Brown may send Florentine here. W. M. Hedges may conclude to start Monte and Kittie i Piatt is a possibility, though Pons and Holder • have not made known their intentions.
