WRANGLER BEST IN THE MUD Beats True American in Feature Attraction at Columbus — Shine On Outlasts Double Shot. COLUMBUS. O., April 22.— At home in the muddy going Wrangler, carrying the Hialeah Stable colors, scored a decisive victory over True American and Rough and Ready in the Deshler Hotel Handicap, fifth and feature attraction of the card at Beulah Park this afternoon. Trainer J. B. McGinn "withdrew Pegasus relying upon his second string Wrangler and his judgment proved correct True American went into the lead at the start, closely followed by Wrangler, but relinquished the lead after completing the first half mile. Then Wrangler drew clear and won with much in reserve. True American held second place safe, while after a slow beginning Rough and Ready easily beat the others for the short end of the purse. The favorite Despair raced on the outside all the way and could not gain on the leaders. Racing this afternoon at Beulah Park was over a muddy track and as a result of changed conditions the public went astray in their selections of the probable winners. Dulcy Lou was most favored in the opener but The Abbot found the going to his liking and ran away from the others to score by a wide margin, the favorite bringing up sec» ond place and Hole Card finishing third. There was a close finish that came with the running of the second race when Shine On, ridden by A. Yerrat, beat Double Shot by a neck. After Virginia Queen tired from setting the pace. Shine On assumed command but Double Shot was close by and fought it out gamely to lose by inches. A decided surprise marked the third race, in which the unconsidered Beaulah Cochran triumphed over the favorite Mad Nell. The latter was a forward contender throughout but was no match for the winner. •
