Griffiths Canter Captures Home-Bred Stakes. i Sparkling Finishes Mark Running of Graded Handicap — Winners Separated by Small Margins. ♦ ■ BALTIMORE, Md., May 6.— The Home-Bred Stakes and the Pimlico Graded Handicap, run in three divisions as Class A, B, and C, were the attractions at Pimlico this afternoon. The Home-Bred Stakes is a sporting affair, the conditions calling for the starters to be the absolute property of their owners since the time of foaling. J. B. Griffith, whose farm is located in the Green Spring "Valley, back of Pimlico, furnished the winner of todays race in Canter. There were only five starters and Canter came from behind in the stretch to beat the tiring Golden Haze by a length and a half in easy fashion. Golden Haze started out like a winner, outstarting her rivals and sprinting into a long lead rounding the far turn. Entering the home stretch Canter moved up fast and in the final eighth assumed an easy lead. This was the second victory in this stake for the Griffith stable, which furnished the winner last spring in Canters half-brother. Single Foot. The outstanding feature of the Graded Handicaps was the close finishes which they produced. Lieutenant II. and Roland just did get up in time in Class A and Class B by small margins of a nose in the first instance and a head in the second. Class B. of the Graded Handicaps, fur- nished another stirring contest, in which Albert Johnson showed to good advantage. He had the mount on Roland and in the early running followed off the pace. Enter- ing the home strecth he came through on the inside and in the final eighth slipped through next the rail to wear down the tiring Heeltaps. It was a desperate drive between the pair, in which Roland proved the gamer and he just did manage to get up in the final strides. Continued on twelfth page. GALA PROGRAM AT PIMLICO Continued from first page. The Graduate Purse, for maiden two-year-olds, was run in two sections as the first and second races. Both furnished good contests, and the finishes found the winners under a hard drive to beat their rivals. II. Q, Bed-well furnished the winner in the first in his home-bred Foretell, while W. J. Salmons Irsa Major was the winner in the second division. Foretell was ridden by K. Barnes and made all the pace and led Zeppelin by a. scant half length. The latter, a first time starter, was a bit green at the post, and began slowly. He kept gaining on the leader and at the finish was going much the faster of the pair. Una Major started from the extreme outside in the second race and Maiben had to keep at him the entire way to make him do his best. After going an eighth he caught Uevelry and the pair raced like a team to the top of the stretch where Irsa Major went a bit wide. When straightened out the Salmon youngster drew away but was under a drive at the end to beat Hot Pepper by a length. Lanark came again at the end and outlasted the tiring Revelry by a neck. Ursa Major is a good looking colt, one of that compact sort, and he runs like he will not do any more than is absolutely necessary. Lieutenant II. furnished a big surprise when he beat Senator Norris by a nose in the third race. He was neglected in the speculation and paid the handsome return of 7 for J2 in the mutuels.
