Beginning at the stand with Anni-hilator, the two went together the first three-quarters, where the latter dropped out. Abstracts fractional figures were highly creditable, they being as follows: :23%, :48%, 1:15. Boon Companion was out for a canter preparatory to a work Thursday and he cov-i ered a good half mile in :49%. Trainer j Woodman is satisfied with the North Star i III. colts training and he is a very likely j starter in the Clark Handicap Saturday. The track remained good, with season- I able weather and, although there were few i long works attempted during the morning, many horses showed a keen desire to run fast for short distances. Russell Cave was sent three-quarters, j which he negotiated in :24%, :50%, 1 :16, | going in a steady manner throughout. Cup- i bearer was worked a slow five-eighths by trainer Middleton, the fractions being :24, :50, 1 :04. This colt looks good, as do the other members of the G. C. Cudahy stable that include Sanola and My Dream and are quartered at Churchill Downs. Klsass galloped a mile easily in :53, 1 :18%, j 1 :46%, and Pyroot went three-eighths in :37%. Baalbec galloped seven-eighths in I 1 :36% under restraint. Quatrain and Captain Hal, after their en-i tirely satisfactory work of the day before, were only brought out for slow gallops Wednesday. Quatrain went once around and Captain Hal twice, after which they returned to their stables. The best moves noted by the older horses in preparation for the Clark Handicap was that of Sunspero and Dare Say. The former covered a mile and an eighth cantering at the end in 2:02%, the fractions being fairly fast, as follows: :24%, :50%, 1:18, 1:45%. Dare Say showed her usual willingness to extend herself in morning work, going three-quarters . in 1:16, the first three-eighths being covered in 34 seconds. The Greentree Stables Leopardess will, according to trainer C. Phillips, be sent here [ to start in the Clark Handicap Saturday. , Her weight allotment in this event is 113 pounds and she will be penalized three Continued on twelfth page. e ABSTRACTS MILE IN 1:42 Continued from first page. - pounds additional for winning the Kings i County Handicap at Jamaica Tuesday. The Clark Handicap this year promises 5 to be a race worthy of the best traditions of I , this event. AVhile Quatrain is not named I ; among the nominees, several prominent t Derby eligibles, including Captain Hal, Kentucky • Cardinal. Lee O. Cotner, Boon Com- | panion, Elsass and Abstract are among those assigned weights. Since 1902, when this event was first made a handicap, it has been won by three-year- - , , olds on only five occasions, Chilhowee, last fl ■ years winner, being one. James V. McClelland will ship the horses ; of Xalapa Farm Stable to Churchill Downs from Pimlico next Saturday. The shipment will comprise six horses, including Sweep-away and Prince of Bourbon, the Derby eligibles. Sweepaway is a likely starter in the Preakness on Friday. J. E. Griffith has wired to Supt. Tom Young for stabling accommodations for Single Foot and five other horses that will leave Pimlico next Saturday for Louisville. Single Foot is the Griffith Derby eligible. Frederick Johnson has not yet fully decided whether he will start Quatrain in j a race prior to the Derby. Owner Johnson makes no secret of the fact that he is well satisfied with Quatrains present condition. Lee O. Cotner will not be sent to Pimlico for the Preakness, according to his trainer, Lon Jonc.s. It is now regarded by close students of i affairs pertaining to Derby starters that Sam i Hildreth will send Silver Fox here to start in the big race. This colt, according to reports, is training well. ♦
