; j i SENSATIONAL DERBY TRIAL ! Son of John Works Mile and an Eighth in 1:51% In Astonishing Display of Speed. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 6.— Dan Scotts Kentucky Derby candidate, Son of John, astounded work watchers this morning when he showed the most sensational Derby trial of the spring season. The bay son of Sir John Johnson and Water K. went a mile and an eighth in the fast time of 1:51%, which is within a second and three-fifths of the track record for the distance, made by One Step in the spring of 1916. With jockey L. Canfield up and carrying close to his Derby weight, Son of John began at the eighth post and worked back to the stand. He was under restraint in the first three-quarters, but after that was given his head and he responded with a fine burst of speed that surprised even his trainer. Will Perkins. The fractional time was :25Vk, :4i M , 1:01, 1:13%. 1:2*%, 1:39% and 1:51%. He was driving in the last quarter. When pulled up he displayed no signs of distress. Step Along showed the best previous trial at the distance last Sunday when the watches caught him in 1 :52%.
