TWENTY OR MORE STARTERS IN KENTUCKY DERBY ! j Quatrain Ruling Favorite— Captain Hal and Kentucky Cardinal Well Supported • Probable Field and the Riders — Training Preparations Concluded and All Candidates Reported Fit and Ready — Latest Derby Gossip * LOPISVILLK, Ky., May 14— With th. Kentucky Derby only two days off. there is a fairly good line on pivopectrre starters, but it is still incomplete, because of the uncertainty of some of the owners regarding their plans. The open aspect of the race is preventing I many owners from making positive declarations. It is however, certain that the j field will number twenty or more. Those that have been in the publics mind for some | i time will continue as they are certain of starting. Their training has been complete and j there is very little contingency of casualty occurring to them before post time. Several ! , have gained much favor in the last days. The one that has become pronouncedly prominent is Captain Hal. He will be the second choice in the race with Quatrain favorite.. Prevailing opinion is that this pair will be the dominant factors. The Kast. numerically will be strong, but it is expected that the West will land the bit; prize. Quatrain is included in the Western brigade. He has never raced on Kastern tracks, and his owner Frederick Johnson, maintains a home in Lexington as well as New York. All of the prospective starters are in perfect racing condition and fit to run the race of their careers. If any of the colts fail to meet the exacting demands involved In a contest like the Derby it will not be the fault of their trainers. The work has been a severe strain upon them all. Their reward will come on the afternoon of the race, and the fortunate trainer of the colt that succeeds j in winning the classic will richly deserve the success that will crown his efforts. In the final Derby works there was none I that stood out with any undue prominence but all were praiseworthy. lrince of Bourbon ,«nd Sweeping Away, the pair scheduled to sport the colors of the Xalapa Farm, showed up well in their gallop at one mile and an eighth. The former, with .Andy Schuttinger up, traversed the route driving in 1 :5." V4, while it took Sweeping Away, with Cliff Bobinson up, a second and a fifth more to make the journey. Gifford Cochrans Flying Kbony, under the direction of trainer William Duke, was given his first workout since arriving here, when he was sent a mile handily in 1 :42 and pulled up in good condition. It was rumored that C. Kummer, who was engaged to ride Flying Kbony in the Derby, would be unable to i -nine here and that a local rider would have the mount. K. L. Gerrys Voltaic, another recent arrival from the Kast in charge of George Continued on sixteenth unco. KENTUCKY DERBY STARTERS Cootinucd from first pftfji Odom. was also given his initial trial here. Almadel. which will be H. IV Ileadleys rolo representative in the Derby, made a fine impression when he worked a mile in 1:43. well in hand all the way. August A. Huschs Chief Fmas was brought out by trainer Harry Sanderson and, with Will McCleary up. went a very easy milo in 1 :47%. The most impressive work for a short trial was witnessed when Captain Hal. with .1. H upel on his back, displayed some of his rpeed by going three-quarters in 1 A-% undt-r restraint. Trainer Will Perkins announced that Clarence Turner had been secured to ride Son of John in the Derby and that the boy would n ,i h here Friday morning. Alex Oordon. trainer of "Dud" Fishers Suope. announced upon his arrival from the F;ust Thursday morning that Lai erne Fa tor would be unable to come here to ride the Fisher colt in the big rate. In his place jockey B I-egere has been set -ured. S. A. Cowan, owner of Booa Companion, who has l»e, a here for some time, announced that Kddie Ambrose had been engaged to pilot his colt in the Derby. .1 I-;. Griffith, owner of Single Foot, arrived Thursday morning and was out at the 1 ovmm to inspect his 1 erby colt. Mr. Orif-fith intends going to Lexington to attend the dispersal sale of the Nursery Stud tomorrow. Montfort and B. Jones, owners of the Aud-ley Farm Stable, arrived Thursday and will , remain over for the Derby. Lee O. otner came out of his race of Wednesday in good condition and his owner. l. V. Collins, is more hopeful than ever of the colts succt ss in the Derby.
