May 14.— The cherry and white of James Butler was carried to victory in another of Jamaicas stakes, when Iique. under severe punishment from jockey J. Maiben. got up in the final strides to account for the Spring Handicap for $: .H00 at three-quarters. H. I. Whitneys Noah was send, while Silver Fox, from the Kanoocas Stable, was third. Lee Rosenbergs Polly McWiggles. the other starter, faded from the picture after the half mile had been covered. The start was a good one and McAtee hustled Noah to the lead. He quickly assumed a safe advantage, while loliy McWig-j gles was racing after him. with Pique in third place. Silver Fox. after beginning forwardly. dropped back and was quickly outran. j Bounding the far turn Noah hugged the rail j and Maiben moved up on the outside with ; Pique. The latter respo del gamely to pun-! ishment and. swinging for home, was lapped ; on the leader. In the meantime Silver Fox J had settled into his stride and was gaining fast on the outside. When well settled in I the stretch run, Noah began to bear out slightly and carried Pique with him. Fator swerved to the inside withSilver Fox. In a gruelling drive through the final eighth ! Vulnad went along with him while Athelstan after being bumped was : taken in hand and allowed to drop back. j Pounding the far turn Vulnad moved up with j determination and assumed the lead. Top Sergeant, however, was not done and came ; with good courage under pressure through the stretch and was winner in the final drive. Thimble showed decided improvement in her I race today and was a good third. The largest field of the meeting appeared for the third race which engaged eighteen platers to go three-quarters. Westover. racing for C. Ferraro. was returned the winner j in a drive from Mrs. A. Swenkes Hidden Jewel, while H. S. Bowns Akbar was third. Following a ten minutes delay at the post. the field left in straggling alignment. Hidden .lewd was rushed into the lead by McAtee while Trapdale went along after him, the others were bunched up and scattered over a sixteenth of a mile.
