Outstanding Incidents in the History of the Kentucky Derby Omar Khayyam was the first and only imported thoroughbred to win the famous race. Sir Barton was the first maiden to score a Kentucky Derby victory. Sir Barton is the only horse to date to win both the Derby and .the Preakness. Regret is the only filly that ever triumphed in the Derby. Only one Kentucky Derby winner has ever sired a winner of the event. Halma won in 1895.
