Fair Play, Sire of Man o War, Brings 00,000 [NURSERY STUD SALE ♦ All Records Broken — Sixty-Eight Head Realizing 82,000. 1 J. E. Widener Pays 00,000 for Fair Play — Big Demand for Choice Mares. ♦— LKJUMUTUN, Ky., May 15. All records for the sale of horses of any kind or breed in the world were broken here today, when 68 head Caf thoroughbreds were sold by public auction for S7S2.0O0. They comprised three stallions for 41,000 and sixty-five mares, some of them with foals at heel, for 11,000. The average of the sale was 1,500. They were the thoroughbreds bought from the estate of the late Maj. August Belmont by Joseph M. Widener for the announced purpose of resale. Fair Play, sire of the mighty Man o War and other notable horses, was the star of the sale. The son of Hastings— Fairy Cold, one of the greatest stallions of American turf history, brought the high price of 00,000. The day and conditions could not have been better if ordered. The attendance was the largest over seen at a sale here. With the sun shining brilliantly and with 2.500 persons from all parts of the country seated and standing about the ring of tan bark spreading a blue grass woodland, C. J. Fitz Cerald opened the sale at 10:30 oclock by introducing Dr. Thomas [4. Settle, rector of the Kpiscopal Church, of which denomination the late Maj. August Belmont was a member and of which Joseph E. Widener is a member. "We of Kentucky are happy to have so many of you who are visitors assembled here today," said Dr. Settle. "We are proud of this beautiful country in which we live. We believe it the greatest garden next to heaven and we want you to help us enjoy what our God in Heaven has given us to enjoy, hut we are sad today, some of us, to see this great stud of wonderful thoroughbred horses dispersed. This Nursery Stud, whieh was [built up to a high state of perfection by a | great student of blood lines from the foundation assembled by his father on this beautiful place, has been a thing of great pleasure for many of us. "With thoughts of him who maintained this great establishment and who has parsed to his eternal reward, let us all rise and uncover for a moment in silent tribute to the memory of Major Belmont." Kveryone in the vast throng stoood with heads bowed for nearly a minute. "Thanks," aid Dr. Settle, and as he stepped from the auction box John Bain, the auctioneer who was substituting for his brother, George A. Bain, stepped up and was introduced by Mr. Fitz Gerald, who said, "Mr. Widener, as you will observe by the form of the catalogue and by the proceedings you will note as this sale progresses, has insisted on the utmost frankness in the conduct of this sale. Mr. j Bain will now begin the auction by offering I the good mare Astrology." The sale progressed without a drag until after thirty-two head at 12:25 p. m. had been j disposed of for an aggregate of 0:1,500, when intermission of one hour for luncheon was announced. Everyone went forthwith to partake of the splendid repast of burgoo and sandwiches of barbenued meats. The following is a summary of the Nursery Stud sale : SIRES. Sire. Age. rv 1i£rec, Buyer. Price.
