UNEXPECTED RESULTS * Materialize With Changed Track Conditions Due to Rain. — i Bad Day for Followers of Favorites — Starbeck Furnishes Biggest Surprise in Feature. 1 LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 29.— Heavy rains during the morning changed the going to favor mud performers and the threatening weather also held down the attendance. The track was not as bad as expected for firm footing was the rule. Most of the races brought unexpected results with the favorites downed decisively. The stellar upset came in the feature race, a handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, in which only three starters met. the O. F. Cm issant pair. Kentucky Cardinal and Stanwix being withdrawn on account of the condition of the track. Starbeck. which has been performing disappointingly, was the victor over Nassau and Graeme. His success was aided materially by the start, which favored him and caused Nassau to b? a sufferer on account of being knocked out of it. Graeme also had a bad break. McCoy, on Starbeck, took advantage of his good beginning and hustled his mount into a long lead, causing Nassau to be kept at his hot pace to be within striking distance. Starbeck continued to show the way under restraint until just before reaching the stretch, where Nassau moved up threateningly, but any chance he might have had of heading Starlit eh went glimmering when Vlergler rode wide and list much ground. Starbeck ultimately won by nearly two lengths. Nassau beat Gracm ! home easily for second place. The latter was far back for the entire way. W, Howes Socket In was the first favorite of the afternoon to succeed. His victory came in the sixth race, in which two-year-olds started and he might have been beaten had Dolly Hay been ridden in more competent style. The filly suffered considerably soon after the start when crowded and V. Moore finally took her back and raced around the others. She came like a shot in the stretch, but Socket In, under hustling tactics, held her safe. Jack Knight, one of the outsiders, finished in third place, BIPREMIS A SURPRISE. Hal Price Headleys Supremus, furnished the upset in the fourth race, which held the position of secondary feature. He won in handy style, after having been well up with the leaders from the start. Kitty I at finished in second place, and her close proximity to the winner at the end was due to her saving much ground at the stretch turn. Louis Rubenstein finished in third place. Had Connelly kept him closer to the inner rail during the stretch racing he would have finished second. The Parkview Stable owned Sola Mia, furnished some excitement, when she got the better of the diminutive V. Moore and cantered off for three-quarters before the start. She raced well to finish in fourth place. The disappointment was Betelguese. He retired after half a mile and showed a decided dislike for the muddy going. J. B. Respess scored his initial victory of the meeting, when Escapader got home in front in the opening dash. He was so lightly considered that he was grouped with others in the field. Escapader was lucky to win at that for had a stronger rider been on Warfare, he would have won. The crowding that came soon after the start destroyed the chances of Gloria Quayle and Black Grackle, the two best supported ones. Escapader changed ownership, G. F. Croissant securing him at a est of ,300. The Croissant colors finished in front In the second race, in which thirteen maiden youngsters started. Hitter won in runaway style, with Spices finishing in second place, and Turner getting up in the last stride to down Ma.-s ■ • fi r third place. Jockey Mortaaaaa who rode Escapader in the op. iiiM; dash, followed with a victory in the third race on Hutch. Girl. He rushed her into the had after going half a mile and won well in hand, from Theo Fay, with Talequa third. Stall. r and stump Jr., were never formidable. Stump .Ir.s showing was in striking contrast to his winning performance in a previous start.
