Rntwell — First Success of J. K. L. Ross Stable. ♦ 1 TORONTO, Ont, May 29.— When Mainmast took the Falmouth Plate Handicap, at three-quarters, fifth on the card, it marked the fastest three-quarters of the meeting, the race being run in 1:12%. Incidentally it completed a double for the Whitney silks and Jimmy Butwell. Scotch Broom was two lengths back, but five lengths in front of Tony Beau. Scotch Broom went to the front at the half, but Mainmast had overhauled him at the stretch and went on to win with-! out any opposition. Flag of Truce was prom-; I inent in the early running, but Scotch Broom disposed of the Morrow horse, which finished last. I With an improvement in weather conditions, Woodbine Park presented a brighter spectacle on Friday than on any of the preceding I days and at least 10,000 were on hand when the bugle sounded for the opening race. I The program did not offer much and the crowd, under the circumstances, was rather out of the ordinary for a Friday. Genuine regret was expressed on all sides when the news of the death of the wife of J. E. Seagram of the Ontario Jockey Club, j executive and owner of the Seagram Stable, i spread through the grounds. Arno, a black and yellow representative in the first race, , was scratched out of respect to the memory of Mrs. Seagram. j | Golden Rule ran a fast six furlongs when , the son of Wrack won the first race, the Strathcona Purse, from Heeltaps and Puff Ball in 1:13 flat. It, incidentally, marked the first win of the meeting for J. K. L. Ross. i [ Only three answered the call in the Thick Thome Steeplechase, the richest offering of the day, having ,000 added, and fourth money went by default Frank Furst, carry- ing R. Pendings colors, went to the front | at the first turn and was never headed, al-Ihough Golden Cup, which finished second,! was never far away. The winner made two j bad landings, at the third and thirteenth jumps, but Haynes held on. Coming to the1 fourteenth jump. Golden Cup tried to go to UM leader and, while gaining slightly, was not aide to reach the Pending gelding. In the race home, after the last jump, Frank Furst was tco strong and increased his lead to two lengths. Ethereal, an odds-on choice, was an easy winner of the Rutland Plate at four and a half furlongs, third on the program. leading . home Compromise and Fore Lady by a length. The Whitney representative had a | good margin on Fore Lady for second place, j j Lady Chilton tried to make a run-away race of it, but Mooney called on the Campfire filly at the half and, coming into the stretch, i he had assumed an easy lead, while Compromise overtook Fore Ijidy, which had been chasing I.ady Chilton hard, but the : Bcdwell filly could not get near Ethereal, I which improved her margin right to the end. In the Gateside Plate, at one mile, for Ca- | nadian-breds. Tricky Take Off quickly moved into the lead and never relinquished it to finish in front of Hoi Polloi, with Catamaran third. The placed horses practicslly monop-! olized the race, although Smooth Ice worked, Continued on sixteenth pace MAINMASTS SPEED DISPLAY fContlmieil from first pace. Into a contending position, but was unequal to the occasion and Rallim. which had been last to the half-mile post, came on to finish fourth. In the Hampton riate. at five-eighths. Flapper Girt came fast in the stretch to dispose of Miss Lester, which begun In .front and hung on tenaciously, standing off Billy Mann for second money. Mb * I-estor sprinted into the lead when the barrier wan sprung, closely followed by Mapper Girl and Billy Maun and did not succumb to Flapper Girl until half way down the stretch. Buttercup was in close quarters In the bark stretch, but got clear and had no mishaps down the stretch, hugging the rail, while Billy Mann went well out, Th? last race on the card was the Cobourg Plate at a mile and a sixteenth. The winner proved to be Old row. with L. Schaefer In the saddle ; Sir Leonid finishing second and Incle Jay third.
