FOR CONEY ISLAND STAKES Gratifying Response in Entries Announced by Racing Secretary Martin Nathanson. LATONIA. Ky., June 6.— Martin Nathan-eon. racing secretary of the Coney Island race course, devoted Saturday to a final canvass for stake nominations among the horsemen at Latonia. The twelve stakes to be decided at Coney Isla;id during the summer cl-sed at midnight. Mr. Nathnr.son reported gratifying success as a result of his visits to New York and Kentucky. In reply to a general inquiry by the horsemen, Mr. Nathanson announced that the racing rules in force at Coney Island will be those of the Kentucky State Racing Conlmission, except only in such minor instances as may be found advisable because of the change In territo-y. It has been decided that for the better control of racing at Coney Island, It will be advisable to issue licenses to trainers and riders. The fees will be nominal, one dollar each, and will be funded for the benefit of racing charities. The stewards. Messrs. C. W. Hay, George Brown, Jr., and M. Nathanson, will net as a license board. There bad been no fej for registration of colors which have previously been registered with the Kentucky, New York, Maryland and Canadian governing bodies. Twelve stakes cli sed on Saturday with an aggregate added value of J8G.OO0. The overnight program will have 0,500 added to sevr-n purses, with none less than ,300 value. When, by reason of a race to AH, the distribution for a day falls below 0,500 the difference in that aggregate will be prorated among the purses for the day succeeding. Six weeks ago Mr. Nathanson placed nn order in England for three dozen of the fiber skull caps to be worn by riders. The model was selected from among all the skull caps in the United States, Great Britain and Australia as having the greatest resistance power in case of accidents to riders. The model adopted for use at Coney Island is, witli additional improvements, the one whose use was demonstrated to Mr. Nathanson by the Prince of Wales at the time of his visit to the United States in 1924. The use of these caps will be obligatory. Mr. Nathanson reported that the stakes have filled wilh practically all of the best racing material in the country- Closing so shortly before the opening of the meeting, the entry list means practically active performers only. In New York Mr. Nathanson secured ttie entry, among other stars, of American Flag, By Hisself, Silver Fox, Flying Bbotiy. Master Charlie, Hamadan, Swope, all of the Harry Payne Whitney top-notchers. Pique and Single Foot for the Derby. Coventry will probably not train. Frederick Johnson advised„Mr. Nathanson that Quatrain wilt be started only once and retired until fall. This horse was badly outrun on Friday at Belmont Park. Among the Coney Island Handicap nominations are Alta-wood. Wise Counsellor, Black Gold, Mad Play, Sarazen, the best of the R. T. Wilson and W. J. Salmon string, in charge of Thomas J. Healey ; a new division of the Harry Payne Whitney stable; Serenader, Sting anil the Xalaia Farm horses. Five or six stables are expected to ship to Coney Island in their entirety. Among thi Kentucky horses, Mr. Nathanson is of ths opinion that every prominent performer has been named for the stakes.
