WINS BROOKLYN HANDICAP 1 i Mad Play Captures Inaugural Feature of Aqueduct Meeting * Stings Wonderful Winning Streak Broken, th* Butler Colt Outgaming Lightly Weighted Catalan for Second Place • NEW YORK. N. Y .. June 15. — Mad Play, the brother to old Mad Hatter that races for Ihe Rancncas Stable, brought an end to the wonderful winning streak of James Butlers t i Sting when he led him home in the mile and an eighth of the Brooklyn Handicap this after- ■ . ] noon. This was the big opening feature of the Queens County Jockey Club meeting and it j | was the occasion for a tremendous crowd at the popular course. The Brooklyn renewal was ! i a worthy one and it resulted in a great contest when l ack of Mad Play, Sting outgamed the lightly ; weighted Catalan to take second place, with Richard T. Wilsons Wilderness, only : recently back from Canada, the one to finish fourth. Back of him came King Solomons j ! Seal, Aga Khan, Sunsini. Klondyke, Flames and Cherry Pie, in the order named. j Little time was lost at the barrier and the start was a good one, the ten moving away : ; so , well aligned that it was some time before there was any thinning out of the charge. i Then Fator had Mad Play in the lead and he was destined to hold that command through - I i out. Sting was right at his heels and under a slight restraint, and Aga Khan and Catalan ■ followed running like a team, with Sunsini and Wilderness close at hand. The others fol- .lowed in close order, though Klondyke was slow to be under way and he brought up the end of the procession. leaving the back stretch. Fator permitted Mad Play to increase his lead to two lengths and at this stage of the running Catalan ranged alongside of Sting and Ambrose had him under a restraint that suggested his coming on at the first asking. There was little change in the running positions of the others. Swinging into the stretch Mad Play was still clear of his company and racing strongly, and still it was Catalan and Sting, closely lapped, that headed the others. Sunsini. King Solomons Seal and Wilderness were next in close order and all were well flattened out for that race through the long stretch. REAL BATTLE FOR PLACE. Fator kept Mad Play hard at his task all the way home and. racing truly and well, he never faltered to still be a length and a half ] • to the good at the end. The fight for second place between Catalan and Sting was a bitter one to the last stride, where the magnificent courage of the son of Spur told and he dropped his ncse down in front for that end of the prize. Two lengths back of Catalan, Wilderness outfinished King Solomons Seal and the others were strung out, with Cherry Pie, the horse that had given Sting such a battle in the running of the Suburban, j I last of the lot. j Sting came out of the race slightly lamed : and it may have accounted for his not giv- 1 ing a better account of himseslf, though he ran a smashing race under the burden of 127 pounds. Cherry Pie was one of the real disappointments of the running. His was a particularly | dull performance and in marked contrast to I his race in the Suburban. It was a smart lot of sprinters that came together in the opening six and a half furlong dash and Nedana from the Uancoeas Stable proved best when after coming through on the inside in the long stretch run she outstayed Candy Kid. while Beatrice beat Sunsard, the only other starter. Sun-sard set the early pace with Candy Kid following him. They opened up something of a gap, but when th" stretch was reached Sunsard was through and Candy Kid took | command. It had cost him something to j put the Kilmer sprinter away and swinging for home he had been carried a bit wide. ! This gave Fator his opportunity with Nedana | and he rusht d the filly through to have her gorng away at the end. Beatrice came with a belated rush to take third, while the early pacemaker quit badly at the end. BAYSHIE TO IJUITTAMr. Mrs. George W. Lofts Brittanic was winner of the Bay. side claiming steeplechase from H. W. Maxwells Vox lopuli II. and W. V. Pwyers St. Lawrence, aft.-r falling ! at the water, was remounted and finished ■ i the course to g.t third place. The only other .starter was J. R Macomb.-rs Iilue and Rod I ; and he was knocked down at the water by I St. Lawrei when th.- Dwjrer jumper tell. j Brittanic and St. l.awr. taca Were the ones to show the way until the water was . reaeh.d. where both st. Lawrence and r.lue 1 and Bed were . Hmhai ted. That 1. ft Brittanic in the l.a.l. but Vox lopuli II., was elos.- after him. ami under a si. a. lying r,.. j sttaint. In the run through the back field Sasoot called on Vox lopuli II. and he I raced by Mis. Lofts jump. r. but Brittanic i . was not through, and when Kl.eger catted t on him he went to Vox lopuli II., and ■ i tl..re was a lively battle for the remaiinl.r of the journey.
