MONTREAL, Que., June 16.— A claiming race at a mile and five-eighths, the longest *of the present Canadian season, was the best offering of todays program of the Montreal Jockey Club at Blue Bonnets, which was de-| voted entirely to platers. The long-distance contest drew a field of six and was run over a track that was deep in mud from overnight rains. While the track was bad, the weather had cleared by noon and there was another large crowd present. C. B. Shafers Roxana was an easy winner. Ridden by B. Thompson, she showed the way to her opponents for the entire dis- tance, winning by five lengths with speed in reserve. St. Martins raced in closest pur-, suit of the winner throughout and earned second place by three lengths over Vitamin. These three furnished the contention, the others never being contenders. The Shafer stable lost a double when Odd Seth was disqualified after finishing first in the fifth race, a seven-eighths dash. The disqualification was the first of the meeting and it was richly merited, as the foul committed by Ridenour, who had the mount on Odd Seth, was visible to the stands. In the drive through the stretch, %with Soggarth Aroon pressing him close, he repeatedly struck him over the head with his whip forcing him back. Mooney immediately went before the stewards to claim a foul, bi-t it wa; unnecessary, as they had seen it and promptly took down Odd Seths number, placing Soggarth Aroon first, Dick "Whittington second and Black Hackle third. The first two races were split races at five-eighths for maiden two-year-olds. The L.orncliffe Stables Spring Branch, ridden by Bourassa, won the first section, beating Earl Combs. Twinola and four others, while C. P. Winfreys Janis D. took the second. She downed Basillette and Pay Girl and five others in the number. The third was patterned for Canidian-breds at five and a half furlongs. Nine paraded and Romanelli had John Whytes Ma-rato up in the closing strides to beat the Continued on sixteenth page. Mooney scored his second victory of the afternoon astride Stroller in the sixth. After racing St. Queutm into defeat in the early running Stroller had enough left to stall off the closing rush of Pablo. The latter ran a fine race after being far back in the early running. St. Uuentin held on gamely after being passed and easily defeated Pali for the minor award.
