MENIFEES FAST RACE i Brings Victory in Outstanding Contest at Latonia. ■ Jockey Mortenson Narrowly Escapes Injury When Mikado Falls in Sixth Race. LATOXIA, Ky., June 16— Menifee, carrying the colors of S. S. Combs, president of the Kentucky Association course, again demonstrated his sprinting ability this afternoon when he took into camp a band of the best horses here that opposed him in the five and a half furlongs race, the outstanding one on the card, and he covered the distance In 1:05%, which is one-fifth second off the track record. His victory was of the hollow type, having led from the start by a wid margin to finish well in hand with the outsider Baalbec closest to him at the finish. Brown Sugar finished in third place. Latonias racing offering Tuesday was somewhat below standard, a majority of the seven races being at the shorter distances and it affording on the whole horses of the mediocre stamp opportunity to earn purses. The attendance was surprisingly large considering that there was no feature and the intense heat that prevailed until a smart shower came just before the sixth race for a brief duration. It did no damage to the track, merely laid the dust It cooled the atmosphere considerably though and gave a respite from the heat. BEES LUCKY SUCCESS. The sixth race came near being grief to jockey Mortensen, rider of Mikado, which fell heavily at the first turn where there was a bad jam in the scramble for position. Bees, a new comer here, owned by J. C. Kilts, who is heading the rehabilitated Dade Park racing venture, was the victor here. His success was of the lucky variety for Col. xilmore was probably best in the race and failed solely because of jockey L. Jevings inability to hustle his mount harder. ol. lilmore came with a rush when urged hard and would have won in a few strides more. Jockey Mortensen. after Mikado rolled over him. scrambled out of harms way and walked back unaided to the jockeys room. He was shaken up some. The Cincinnati Stables Myra M., furnished the upset in the fourth race which she won handily from Uncle Bob and L*ongport after drawing away from the field in the last eighth. Twister was backed in confident rtyle but she never figured seriously, being far in the wake of the leaders after her rider took her back soon after the start. Another spirited finish came with the last race when Fanny De Coursy and Koyal Mis.s fought it out hard all during the last quarter. Fanny l e Coursy had been the leader in tho early part but seemed done for when Koyal Miss took command just before reaching tho stretch. She came again however and continuing gamely steadily wore down RojsJ Miss to win in the last stride, lioyal Miss appeared a certain winner when taking the lead but gave way slowly but steadily in tho last sixteenth. Kit raced well to beat homo the others. CLOISTER BY INCHES. One of the spectaeulnr finishes that came during the afternoon transpired in the third race, which brought to the post a fairly good band of platers and it found Cloistt r and Tom Hare Jr. battling it out in strenuous style. Cloister getting the verdict by a matter of inches. I It was a different showing he made today oer that he displayed at Ixmisville. It was ins first ess.iy here. He was backed exten-slvetjr. but his backers were not overly jubilant when he continued far out of it for the first half mile. He then began to move up coming around his rivals and drew away in COBApaay f Tom Hare Jr. in the last eighth and fought it out hard. Tom Hare Jr. fin-i-heil well in advance of Goldfield. The second race found Barbara lest of the Slaves. Other maiden fillies that -=t irte.l. She was harked to the exclusion of the others and she won as if jMinnds the be-U.
