GRAY SILVER FOX VICTOR First Winner of the Newly Estab ¬ lished Shevlin Stakes Finishes Half Length In Front of Swope Kentucky Derby Winner Flying Ebony Badly Beaten NEW YORK N Yf June 23 Silver Fox which races for the Rancocas Stable was the first winner of the new Shevlin Stakes at Aqueduct today when he led home Bud Fishers Swope with Gifford A Cochrans Kentucky Derby winner Flying Ebony in third place The only other starter was H P AVhitneys Reminder The Shevlin is a mile race in memory of the late James Shevlin former president of the Queens County Jockey Club It was worth 7400 to the winner winnerInteresting Interesting sport came out of the card that had been prepared by Fred Rehberger and there was a large attendance out While the day was cloudy it was ideal for racing and the track was at its best bestNo No time was lost sending the field away for the Shevlin and while Silver Fox domin ¬ ated the running throughout Swope ran a surprisingly good race and after closely fol ¬ lowing the pace he caused some uneasiness from the manner in which he hung on under a drive in the eighth eighthIt It was inside the last eighth mark that Swope was going so well that Fator drew hiy whip and struck Silver Fox sharply to rouse him to the danger The gray was evidently loafing for he came away under the punish ¬ ment but he only had a half length to spare at the end Flying Ebony the Kentucky Derby winner after beginning well could never keep up with the pace and he was five lengths back of the first two and just a length before Reminder This race decided that both Swope and Silver Fox will be shipped to Latonia for the Derby Saturday After the finish Swope was worked out a mile and a quarter In 2 OS OSThe The first race of the day was a fiveeighths dash for selling plater juveniles and in a rousing finish Samuel Ross Sea Net was a winner by a narrow margin from William Ziegler Jrs Instructress with J P Jones Famine third over Mrs George Reads Upton and the Everglade Stables Donarita Avas fourth fourthUpton Upton was the one to cut out the early running but he gave way to Instructress and the Ziegler filly continued to show the way until right at the end she surrendered to the rush of Sea Net Famine also closed with a rush to land third thirdMrs Mrs Walter M Jeffords Golden Spire was Continued on sixteenth page GRAY SILVER FOX VICTOR Continued from first page an easy winner of the mile for maidens that was the second offering and when Sande returned to the scales with him he was given an ovation such as is heard only after the running of a stake Shady Sadie from the Victory Stable raced to the second place and William Ziegler Jrs Star Saint saved third from E F Cooneys Alkali Ike IkeAfter After Golden Spire raced away in the lead at the rise of the barrier Rudolf went to him and Alkali Ike on the inside also gave close chase This quickened the pace and Sande cased Golden Spire back and permitted the other two to show the way though he rated Mrs Jeffords colt well wihin striking distance distanceBefore Before the stretch was reached both Rudolf and Alkali Ike already showed signs of weak ¬ ening and there Sande made his move with Golden Spire that soon saw him in the lead At the same time Star Saint moyed in deter ¬ mined fashion and for an instant he threat ¬ ened Shady Sadie in the meantime was working her way up on the outside outsideThrough Through the final eighth Sande had only to sit still and have Golden Spire home winner by two lengths while Shady Sadie easily outfinished Star Saint to take secoivl place with plenty to spare spareThere There was a long delay at the post in the six and a half furlongs handicap for which Coronation and Wellfinder were chiefly to blame The start was a good one and it was Mrs P J Lavins Kit Carson that was winner from Mrs R I Millers Wellfinder by a narrow margin while Great Man from the stable of Mrs Victor Vivaudoa beat H P Whitneys Coronation for third
