KING NADI PROMINENT Scores Hollow Victory Over Othsr Latonia Derby Eligibles Easily Triumphs Over Captain Hal and Step Along in Muddy Go ¬ ing Percentage Easily LATONIA Ky June 23 Prominent La ¬ tonia Derby eligibles that are rated as the outstanding contenders for Saturdays big race furnished the principal contest this afternoon and it resulted in a hollow victory for King Nadi which raced in his best form aided by the muddy going of which he is decidedly fond Captain Hal finished in sec ¬ ond place and Step Along third Gold Bug the only one not a threeyearold was the other starter in the race raceThe The quartet raced at a mile and a six ¬ teenth for a purse of 1800 and the favorable conditions for King Nadi caused him to rule a pronounced choice Opinion was verified by the easy success of King Nadi Stutts who rode him incidentally it marked the first victory for that rider since his injury the opening day at Lexington followed Cap ¬ tain Hal closely for the first half mile but after taking the lead at this point he had no difficulty thereafter and the contest for first money was practically over before the field had reached the stretch Captain Hal did the best he could but that was not enough for the winner in the going that prevailed Step Along was a considerable distance away from the pair and after the finish he con ¬ tinued on working a mile and threeeighths as a preliminary for his expected start next Saturday in the Derby He covered the dis ¬ tance in 22GV tired tiredCREDITABLE CREDITABLE PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCEKing King Nadis race was creditable from a time standpoint He concluded the mile and a sixteenth in 147 The first half mile with the middle quarter was practically fast the half being run in 4d with the second quarter in 23 Thereafter it was a gradual slowing up but King Nadi was well In hand all along alongThe The secondary feature a handicap at five and a half furlongs uncovered what prob ¬ ably is the best mud running twoyearolds in these parts J W Parrlshs Percentage was the winner and his success was as easy as that of King Nadi in the preceding race The nine that answered the call hold a high rating in their division but Percentage made a show of them moving into a long lead with the utmost ease and drawing out in the stretch to win as his rider pleased Mary Kinkead coupled with Dark Phantom fin ¬ ished in second place and Billy Witt hard urged headed the others The J N Camden pair were pronounced favorites and Mary Kinkead flattered during the earlier stages by staying close to the leader but she was no match for him when it came to the final test testDark Dark clouds enveloped the Latonia course all during the afternoon threatening added rain fall to that of the night but it failed to materialize The drenching the track re ¬ ceived during the night made the going muddy and it caused a wholesale withdrawal from the different races all the fields being small The racing was interesting despite the changed track OH SUSAXKA IX FRONT The public began auspiciously when Oh Susanna opened proceedings by an easy vio tory in the first race She was favored and never gave her supporters much concern for she led from the start Hilary hard ridden and saving much ground just got up to take second place from the fasttiring Little Jimmy JimmyThe The maiden twoyearold race brought ten starters to the post and it enabled Uncle Bob to graduate He moved away from the others during the last eighth to win from Long Port with Ben Hapdley in third place Mary Ellen O made a show of the four others she met in the mile and sixteenth raou that brought five platers to the post She won with consummate ease from Escarpolette with Moon Lady in third place The disap ¬ pointment was Royal Miss which made a dull showing and was beaten soundly after half a mile mileJ Harry Payne Whitney lost a race with his Sandhurst due to the incompetency of jockey W Charles who rode him He was beaten half a length by Cimmerian after a hard drive in the stretch Quiescent just beat Friend for third place The closing race at a mile and threcslx teenths was annexed by Wrack Ray which raced in improved form and in his best stylo being aided considerably by the going H j disposed of the leaders after half a mile and held Aviette safe all during the final finalquarter quarter Considering the threatening weather and absence of any pronounced racing feature a surprisingly largo attendance was on hand to view the racing racingMistress Mistress Mary which broke down in a race Saturday will be sent to W S Paynes farm near Lexington to be bred to Westy Hogan
