TWO STAKE FEATURES • Maryland Jockey Club Offers Fine Inaugural Program. ♦ Pimlico Nursery and Green Spring" Valley Steeplechase the Initial Attractions. ♦ BALTIMORH. Md.. April .10. The Maryland Jockey Club, the oldest and foremost of racing organizations in this state, will inaugurate its spring meeting at the historic-old bimlico course tomorrow. A glance at the entries for the stakes to be decided during the eleven-day meeting, from May 1 to 13 inclusive, augurs well for some of the best racing witnessed in this state this year. Including the Bimlico Nursery, which closed List Septemher, and the Dixie, which closed January 2, there are eleven fixtures on the program, one for each day of the meeting, and they received a total of Ml entries and are classified as follows in the order in which they will be run: May 1 Iimlieo Nursery $ 5.000 added May 1 Jreen Spring Valley Steeple chase r .000 add.-. Bach of these stakes has ,000 added. The Merchants Handicap; a dash of a mile and seventy yards, is an additional feature. The fields, while not large, have I brought together well matched horses and j the prospects for keen sport look exceedingly bright. Kverything is in readiness for the j opening and the course never looked prettier than it does this spring. SOCIETY TO BK UPMBMHUMi A large number of society folks are looked for from New York, Philadelphia. Washing- j ton and other adjacent cities. Parties are ;ilso coming from Cleveland. Boston. Buffalo and as far west as Chicago and the meeting j will be not only an important one in a racing j way but socially as well. Out of town I patrons who have reserved boxes are : i Kdward F. Whitney, Samuel D. Riddle. Com. 1.1. K. L. Ross. Walter J. Salmon. Adm. Cary |T. Grayson. Walter M. Jeffords, George Loft. [Joseph F. Davis. Kdward R. Bradley. William j Woodward, J. W. Biddle, Samuel L. Hildreth and Harry Disston. Among those who will I give dinner parties in the clubhouse are William Woodward, Miss Sarah Baldwin. A. H. Morris, Mrs. Thomas Cottman and R. J. Waldon. There are six named to go in the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase, two of which. St. Pancras and Barleycorn are coupled as the J. F. Widener entry. The topweights are Lpsal at 157 and Labrador at 155. Dunks Green will carry the Salmon colors in the race. Ten are named in the Pimlico Nursery. Northland and Murzim are the Salmon entry ;and Long Joe and Gold Coin the Sagamore i Stable entry. Commander lioss has named his good colt landlord in this stake and if he can trim Red Rocket he will be hard to beat in future juvenile contests. The time set for the first race is 2 :30. The Dixie and the Preakness entries have already been made public, and these stakes 1 will unquestionably be among the outstanding events of the year, not only by reason of their value and prestige, but because they have attracted the best horses in training. The other stakes also are eagerly sought after, and all the prominent owners are numbered among the nominators with the pick of their stables. In the two-year-old e,nts are Dr. W. F. It is interesting to note that the popular Harry Payne Whitney stable has made two nominations to the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase in Heckler and Handsome, both by Whisk Broom II.. and every one will wish them luck in their new field. The- Pimlie o Oaks will have its eighth renewal this spring, and among the nominations are- W. B. Coes speedy Black Maria, which will try to duplicate the feat of Cleopatra, Pompe-ys dam, in 1020, when she-lauded the stake in the same colors.
