DERBY HOPES ON VIEW ♦ Percentage Fails Dismally in Leland Hotel Handicap. • Champ de Mars Creates Favorable Impression — Double Triumph for J. C. Milam Stable. • LKXIXC.TON, Ky.. May 3.— Another heralded Kentucky Derby eligible became discredited this afternoon when Percentage failed signally in the Leland Hotel Handicap, at one mile, featuring the Kentucky Associations racing offering for Monday. Percentage was heaen handily by Seths Alibi, which led him for the entire way and held on gamely all during the final hard drive. Xearing the finish Percentage was in danger of being headed for second place by Cherokee bee, and it took all of jockey Barretts skill to make him last long enough to outstay Cherokee I*ee by a matter of few hes. Alleghan, another Party prospect, was the only other starter in the race and he was dune after reaching the stretch. Seths Alibi was hustled into the lead by .1. Meupel immediately after the start, but Percentage was in close pursuit of him and from the easy manner of going during the first three-quarters appeared able to pass into the lead at anytime that his rider called on liim. Approaching the stretch. Seths Alibi and Percentage were almost on even terms and it appeared then as if Percentage would come away to tin easy victory. Seths Alibi would not be denied and. holding on gamely, forced Percentages rider to go to the whip and outstayed him to the finish. Cherokee Lee would have been second in another stride for Percentage was tiring badly. KKFNF BltOS" KF.IKKSKNT ATIVE. While Percentage was given a set-back during the afternoon, another Derby eligible became more prominent as a result of his winning performance. This was the Keene-land Stud-owned Champ de Mars, that will carry the Keene Brothers colors in the big fixture at Churchill Downs. His triumph came in the Richmond Purse over the Futurity Course in which he met six other three-year-olds and bested them handily, winning from Councillor Connolly with Lin-pette in third place. Champ de Mars was worked out to complete a mile, and covered the distance in 1 :10 V Heavy going was the order here, the result Of the steady rain during the night, and it accounted for heavy withdrawals from most of the numbers. The attendance was again of generous proportions, the bracing temperance being welcome after the intense heat of the last two das. The racing did not suffer by the decreased fields or the changed going, and finishes were close after spirited earlier contention. .1. C. Milams stable scored a double with it representatives, Mally Jane and A. B. lJeusinger. The former was victress in the ■pester and A. P. Bensingers success came in the sixth, in which be led home nine other Jpweuilea to score handily from Ortlieb, with Jessie lSelle in third place. MALLY JAM. HAMMLY. Mally Jane opened up proceedings by a ic;ory in the first race over the Futurity Course. She beat Bed Head handily after ra-ing on even terms with the latter for the first five-eighths. The pair led the others by a wale margin during the early stages. Red Mead weakening near the end. Musk-Shop, after a slow beginning, closed an im-ini-nsf pep and finished close to the leading jciir. Mar.v Helen got home in the second race, bringing to the post seven maiden fillies. She won in runaway style after having shown flae speed for the entire race. Marion Llizabclh. hard urged, finished in second place while Ethel Dear took third. There was considerahle interest in the performance of Emblematic, which had shown some fast preliminary trials, lmt she raced poorly and SHU not pecaerered with when she dropped back soon after tin- start.
